The Plane Crash Thread

One of the controllers said “I messed up.” :slightly_frowning_face:

Guy

Everyone fucks up but ATC fuck ups can kill many people

Sad all around

I’d not like to be that guy

OF course its been all over the local (USA) news. Seems the proverbial swiss cheese holes lined up for this accident.

Saw a vid of the plane landing and about to roll out when it smashed into the truck which appeared to be running very fast across the runway and almost got clear of the jet. The whole front end was just demolished. To say the pilots died on the spot is a major understatement, they were likely cut to pieces, two young pilots. Factors in this accident:

  1. MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR blunder on the part of the ATC controller.
  2. Major Major Major blunder of the fire truck dashing at high speed across the runway. The proper procedure is to stop before crossing the runway and look left and right for any approaching aircraft. This crew did none of that, they proceeded to cut very fast across the runway obviously not having looked at either side.
  3. Systematic failure of US ATC practice to have the controller work aircraft about to land/take off as well as ground activity. This is a major safety hole especially at a major airport like La Guardia. US controllers are understaffed. And this controller was handling ground as well as air movements, obviously over whelmed and mistakes can happen especially late at night as was this instance.
  4. Most or many other countries landing aircraft when given permission to land is KING but in US airports controllers are still allowing vehicles to cross if there seems room to spare, they are even allowing planes to take off !!! OR giving permission to land when aircraft ahead are still exiting the runway. This practice should stop immediately. NO permission to land should be given while other aircraft are still on the runway and no way should any vehicles even ATTEMPT to cross the runway. This is an extremely sad case of bad practices coming forth to kill those two young pilots. Plus cause injuries to others. Apparently there was a similar case in another US airport of a plane side swiping a fire truck on landing and this time three fire fighters were killed but none on the aircraft.

More controllers are needed, and no controller should be working air movements as well as ground movements. Landing planes must be cleared to land only when actually cleared to land and no other aircraft or vehicle is in the way.

Lives lost here in an almost ridiculous manner

Tragic deaths in K-Town.

Guy

Interesting investigation involving a flight between Taiwan and S. Africa.

BREAKING: Safari plane carrying 30 people crash lands in Tanzania after striking a zebra during takeoff.

:zebra: :airplane: :fire:

X is funny: Whats black and white but red all over?

Who has priority on the runway when there is a zebra crossing?

I have listened to experts about the following three recent incidents

Vietnam Air barely takes off in Munich

Prime Air overshoots the runway

Fly Dubai nearry crashes

Quite interesting:

In the first one, apparently, the captain stepped on the brakes during takeoff… ouch

In the second, the captain ignored multiple warnings and did not go around… ouch

In the third, the captain barely survives and is the hero… yay

Considering how many flights there are, safety is pretty good. In all three above cases, the selection/training of the pilots can be questioned

Yikes!

I shouldn’t have listened to the audio; I can’t get it out of my head now. Terrifying

Yeah— the guy asking “What do you need from me?” Is tragic. Nothing. Nothing to be done.

That Learjet 60 was flying around a storm, and most likely lost control due to icing. Any structural damage that happened to the tail was likely the result of plummeting at high speed (20k ft. per min) without control, and not the cause of the crash. The model does have anti-icing and de-icing provisions, but maybe the conditions were too severe to be flying in thebfirst place.

A family with two young kids was on that plane.
