Those in the CCP who dislike Xi’s policies are hoping for Li Keqiang to restore some common sense. Coupled with the housing/banking crisis, and the effects of ill managed COVID policies, it almost seems like the perfect storm for some drastic change in China.
In order for Xi or Li to keep or take power, they would need high level PLA leaders’ support. Usually the more hawkish one sounds, the more support from the PLA one would garner.
I don’t know if China could keep calm like they did in 1996. Times are very different.
While I suspect you’re right that they knew, I doubt this is evidence of that. I’m sure they had be a bunch of these masks left over from the last trip. Or the one before that. Or the one before that. Or …
