Where are good hand-held grenade launchers when you need them?

I swear, the next time one of those goddamn blue trucks moving at 3 kilos an hour, blaring noise through those loudspeakers comes across my path, I’m…I’m not gonna be responsible for whatever actions I deem necessary to take.

It’s called a “Noise Ordinance” and is enforced everywhere in the civilized world. But noooooo, not Taiwan!

Had Chen here at the weekend. What a noisy prick. All noise… ALL DAY!!

It’s just as well that the sound trucks are out on the streets and the election campaigning officially kicked off, otherwise I might never have known that they’re going to have this election. :sunglasses:

I’d vote for Ma Yingjiu. He doesn’t use speaker trucks.

I live in a place where we don’t get speaker trucks.

Silent here. ahhhh. Prefer it that way.

Eggs will do the job. A few years back I was so nerved by this local election campaigner blaring at our street corner that I trew a few eggs on his truck. Buah!!! he was so fast to move on!
hmm… This poll looks like it’s going the same way the real poll is expected to in March. Anyone care to say why they feel one way or the other about the candidates?
There’s plenty of Chen vs Lien threads, maybe in the Culture&History forum. some with the same poll as this one, so not quite sure why this one has it too. Let’s keep this thread for those speaker trucks.

Throwing eggs at a noisy vehicle? Now that is something I can relate to!

Well over a decade ago, I was living in a wonderfully quiet apartment building in Taipei County at the end of a cul-de-sac with nothing but trees and hills in sight on three of its sides. The other residents all valued peace and quiet as much as I do, and we all lived happily in this oasis of tranquility. But suddenly, out of the blue, some idiots opened an unlicenced kindergarten on the ground floor, and our coveted quietness was rudely destroyed.

The other residents protested bitterly in various ways and searched for effective means to put an end to this terrible intrusion. I quickly came to dread the awful moment every morning when the first car full of screaming kids would drive up and shatter our peace.

One such morning, maddened by the arrival of that intolerable noise, I stepped out onto my 4th-floor balcony and hurled an egg at the approaching car, ducking swiftly back out of sight after seeing it splatter messily all over the car’s bonnet. A couple of minutes later, there was a loud commotion in our stairwell as several people from the kindergarten came storming up to complain about the attack.

But as no one had seen where the offending projectile was launched from, they jumped to the conclusion that it must have been thrown by my downstairs neighbour, who was one of the most vociferous protestors against their business. They pounded angrily on her door, and when she opened it, a screaming row erupted which was soon joined in by other residents. I remained discreetly behind my locked door, splitting my sides with laughter as I listened to the furious exchanges below.

Eventually, it all died down, and our antagonists retreated back to their kindergarten. I didn’t throw any more eggs, but my neighbours kept up their efforts to drive away the kindergarten, which didn’t have a leg to stand on as there was a strict prohibition against any kind of business operating in any of the buildings along our road, and within a week they gave up and moved out. No one ever mentioned the matter of the egg to me, but I’m sure at least some of them must have guessed where it really came from.

The volume of the sound trucks in Taipei that I have seen is significantly quieter than in the past.
Jesus people, it is only for a while and it is part of the fabric of Taiwan life this election season stuff. Enjoy it for the cultural experience that it is. It will be gone soon.
Are you the same people who didn’t like the fireworks going off on Chinese New Year?
“There goes that goddamn Halley’s Comet again!”

So its not just me then? I’ve noticed that too. I bet they pump up the volume as March 20 draws closer though.

Could it be that anyone was ever induced to vote for a particular candidate as a result of hearing a message blared out by one of those sound trucks? It seems unlikely, so what’s the point of having them at all?

Sure, mate, but I was coming out as pro-speaker trucks. I was hoping there might be a kindred soul out there who got pumped when political season rolled around.

The trucks have imbedded subliminal messages of free sex and money. Those trucks rake in the votes, but the people feel strangely empty after casting their ballots…

I haven’t seen ANY speaker trucks yet… are there fewer running around for this election than the previous ones?

Or is this only in Taipei…

OR have I learned to tune them out completely…

Back to the trucks.

Try enjoying this charming cultural experience the way I do. The fuckers started this morning directly under my bedroom window at 8:45 a.m. (I live over a small campaign headquarters) blaring what sounds like a WWI military anthem followed by LOUD campaign rhetoric. This is while PARKED under my window for half an hour. Lots of people in my building work night jobs and I’m sure no one appreciates this inconsideration. Just another reason why guns are outlawed in Taiwan.

I do sometimes worry about that.

Don’t kid yourself. NEVER tip your hat to the locals as to whom you favor. Political feelings run deep here and while they might not indicate their anger and hatred for you at the time you tell them, the memory will linger on, especially after the election is over and one side is the big loser. Another foreign colleague asked me who I wanted to win in my office and I lowered my voice quite a bit and indicated my preference very obliquely without using any names. If overhead and understood I could have instantly made several enemies.

I was on my rooftop this morning when a speaker truck for the pan-blue came along and blaring #2, vote #2.
I started yelling #1, vote #1, number 2 are lyers and cheaters.
Luckily I was on the 15th floor rooftop so nobody could here me, I hope.

The speaker trucks are one of the most annoying, and I believe, biggest dangers to hearing around! Why are there no laws in Taiwan to stop fools from driving around whenever they please blasting noise? Since I have been here, I feel like I have suffered from hearing loss and those damn trucks are surely to blame! God help anyone who may be waiting at a light, like I was yesterday, with one of those trucks nearby!!!

I had one of the fuckers park right outside my front door at 8am on a Saturday a few weeks back with the message on repeat. I was on the verge of killing someone… :fume:

I had one of the fuckers park right outside my front door at 8am
I have to admit that at that time on a weekend morning I’m usually on the freeway going somewhere in a hurry, and have my system cranked loud enough to drown out the sound of military jets taking off with afterburners :smiling_imp:
The sound trucks might have been outside my house too. :astonished:

Keep some wire cutters handy, it only takes a second to cut the wires…

they get the message and move on, silently lol
