The services the government provides...

… are pretty damn impressive considering how low taxes are.

I’m living in a first world country where my income tax is almost twice what it would be in Taiwan. Can I go to the hospital and find a doctor to see for free? Can I fuck. I have to track down individual clinics, 90% of which will not let you visit because they’re understaffed. The roads are in worse condition, the infrastructure is a joke, and the police don’t do a damn thing even for serious crimes.

Taiwan has it’s problems, but you actually get a lot of bang for your buck considering how much tax you pay.

Which 1st world country are you in?

New Zealand.

Maybe “First World” should be in quotes here. Think Taiwan level insulation (ie, none), but 15 degrees colder at all times. And 3 times the rent.

Damn. Why is it so shit there? The population is only 4.5m

What sort of crimes are ignored? And what is the price for rent?

In the 21st century, you need to factor in the perceived value of clean air/food/water and hobbits when calculating the rent.

monkey_yuan do you teach in New Zealand?

Clean Air and Food I’ll give you. But fresh water here is in pretty terrible condition. Most of it is not safe to swim in or drink out of.

Surprising is it may be, most people here don’t live in a digitally edited LOTR vista. They live in ugly expensive little suburbs and towns.

It’s a seriously overrated country. Taiwan has a lot more greenery than NZ.

What zapman said could be applied to Ireland or many any other western countries.
And yet the Asians and Europeans keep emigrating to there…It’s got precious commodities space and nature.

It was brilliant until they started down the property market casino route… Where is safe from that shit in the English or Chinese speaking world ?

PS never been to new Zealand but picture of Auckland look REAL nice to me!

I try and implicitly teach people how to develop software properly but it’s not catching on.

Assaults and thefts are ignored. Police have zero interest, unless it happens domestically, then they’re interested because it’s troublesome for them to visit the same house again and again.

A studio apartment in the largest city (about Taichungs population) is about 27,000 NT a month.

Parts of it are very pretty, I’ll give it that. It’s like the opposite of Taipei - great to look at, a pain in the ass to live in.

I could do with a pretty city to live in, can’t find a single one in Taiwan and most of Asia!

As a Dubliner I can understand your pain , prices have shot through the roof, mainly because of large scale immigration and not enough housing.

Now in new Zealand your salaries aren’t very high and high import costs so it probably hurts even more…

There’s no denying that Taiwanese cities are ugly. You do find some pretty corners, and I do love the forests and mountains, but yeah most of the time it’s crowded alleyways and horrible exteriors. The whole thing looks much better at night when you can’t see the grimey walls as much.

NZ salaries are better than TW ones, but they’re a joke compared to US ones. Last time I went to Dublin was during your last recession (jeez your economy is a roller coaster). Are your salaries quite a better than here now?

At this stage with a family in tow it gets even harder to figure out what to do.
Even though I save a lot more in Taiwan and have an easy and safe life for family I would love a garden and cleaner air But every year the cost of housing has been increasing in most of the countries I’d move to …Can’t win. My rent hasn’t changed in years which means no push factor.
Mostly I’d like a bit of BREATHING SPACE

Salaries in Ireland are quite high (higher than UK) and employment is strong again, problem are housing availability ,costs and taxes. Not even going into healthcare and infrastructure …

NI houses are cheap as chips, but I know there’s that whole tribalism thing and I don’t know if there are areas you wouldn’t feel comfortable in as a person from Dublin.

No way Jose. The place is really messed up , the unionists are mostly really backwards , the pay and jobs available poor and it’s a bit off the beaten path. Would much rather live-in Ireland or the UK o New Zealand!
Oh yeah theres a lot of racists up there as well…

I really like the people there. But I don’t have that magical island wide ability to determine at a glance how someone says the lords prayer or whatever. IE they all sound and act the same to me :stuck_out_tongue: And of course as a foreigner none of it effects me.

monkey_yuan are you from NZ originally?

Funny you should say that. I’ll be moving to Taiwan in a few weeks for a job, and hoping to save enough to buy a small place in NI. It’s where I’m from originally, though I haven’t lived there in many years.

I can completely understand anyone not from there being reluctant to wade into all the nonsense.

We’re not completely backward though. It just looks that way…
