The US is the easiest place for immigrants

That’s the policies of this current nativist, xenophobic administration. That’s not the essence of America.

Sadly, it’s become that. That is what it is now. I am very sad about it.

I hope it gets reversed.

Are you trying to saying the public charge changes are keeping that many people out? It has always been part of immigration law, but now it’s more defined. It really didn’t change that much if at all.

Do we really want to have immigrants who aren’t able to provide for themselves? Every country I’ve been too makes me prove I can provide for my time. It’s not some crazy law.

Public charge laws have made people who are deemed likely to become a public charge law for a long time now. All it added is weighting the usage of public benefits negatively, but skills, education, language abilities, and other positives can cancel them out. Which is good. If someone is skilled and educated, they can still come.

This rule change doesn’t affect that many people. At least skilled people I want to come in.

I’m not saying that. It’s a fact. Legal immigration is down 11%. This is not just from the Times but from immigration attorneys I know.

That is false. Immigrants did not not have to prove their worth financially previously. This is new, the Trump admin slipped it in there.

Do you. know that the foundation of the USA calls for your tired, your huddled masses yearning to be free? Yes I want them. They are your parents. Their kids grow up to be doctors. This is AMERICA. It is not your country club.

Its already curtailed legal immigration 11%. Some countries can not enter America at all now, like Nigerians. You are wrong.

You want?

Your dad wouldn’t have been accepted because he was poor. He would have been considered a public charge and turned away by this admin. This is not American. It is a xenophobic and fascist economic state.

No he wouldn’t. He had a company in Taiwan he founded. If a poor farm boy who didn’t go to college can do it…

Ok…11% of people who aren’t able to provide for themselves is Great :+1:t2:.

Most of that are honestly Indians who have long been taken advantage of H1B visa and turning that into green cards. H1B was supposed to be for immigrants that can bring skills employers are lacking in the domestic job market. But you don’t have to prove that is the case and they come in working for a lot less than American workers.

Wages have also gone up for American workers during this time period.

This is not true. Immigrants have had to show financial capacity. Many changes to the rule have been made, the first was in 1882 when immigrants had to pay tax to enter in the country.

That doesnt mean they should be people who can’t provide for themselves or show skills and education needed to actually provide for themselves in the US. This isn’t early 1900s when you can just get a job.

All this law did was define what was already a rule better. You just can’t be on public assistance for more than 12 months in a 36 month period. This is already pretty nice to be able to be on public assistance for 11 months and be eligible.

I know a lot of immigration lawyers as well. Every year for the last 3 years, I’ve been going to a party in Tuscany where top immigration lawyers come to have a party. A fun time. I’ve had this conversation with people who know a lot more about this than you or me.
