TL;DR : the US told ZTE:“Ok you can buy components from US companies but don’t do business with Iran and North Korea”. ZTE replied:“Yea sure, kkty” then allegedly proceeded to sell stuff to iran and North Korea. The US reacted to this by telling ZTE to get rekt and issued a ban on US components, such as intel cpus and apparently even the Android platform. Now the Taiwanese government asked local companies to apply for permission in order to sell their component to ZTE and Mediatek has the go. No idea what will happen regarding the software, though.
