When I lived in Taiwan, I was surprised at how often I needed to explain the difference between the United Kingdom, Britain, Great Britain, and England to people and shocked that most people used these terms interchangeably and had never even heard of Wales. But I’m no longer surprised by this, because I’ve come to realise that most people in the world outside of the U.K. don’t seem to know these things - which is fair enough. But as a Brit, I was initially taken aback.

That shit is super obnoxious. I know the differences, but am annoyed that anyone would expect me to. Nobody needs countries within countries. It could be solved by reuniting Ireland (which never should have been split) and granting Scotland independence so they can join the EU. Nobody cares what you do with Wales, but either make it part of England/Britain or don’t. None of this halfway stuff.
