Thoughts on the Tsai-Han-Soong Debates

The alcohol will make them feel warm.

Eh each embassy has a full TAITRA and Taiwan Mission specialist team. They are already doing all this he is «proposing». The embassies do not have it any easier than the «trade and representative offices». He makes it sound like they only do diplomatic parties and issue passports and birth certificates.

If he means to give pressure to embassies to bring more tourists like from Nauru or Honduras, I think he just wants to speed up the breakup in diplomatic ties…or drive more diplomats to early retirement.

Reform laws to make them more liberal. Currently, a French graduate student studying in KHH has to leave the country once a year. Help new residents survive and create a better life for their children. [ This should be of interest to people here. ]

If a person has an ARC, there is no need to leave every year. Again, his misunderstanding of the nuances of visa procedures may sound like music to our ears, «oh he cares» ,but it is actually very dangerous. I wouldn’t trust someone with his background and given his statements over Marias, US and Western people in general, to be any willing to issue favorable legislation.

I can translate all of what you said into a sentence.

Han: I’m willing to say ANYTHING, and I mean literally anything to get me elected.

That is a given for most politicians, as well as making such statements about stuff he does not know about. However, they reflect a very dangerous attitude.

I know Tsai had the smarts, but she doesn’t seem that quick on her feet.

She has to wait until the next debate before answering Han in full, and she gives less than stellar answers to reporters.

I have been pondering over this myself, i’m not sure if its a deliberate choice not to go off half cocked. she doesn’t seam to go for the sound bite but comes back later with a bag full of facts. The problem is, it looks like she is lost for words.

I hope everyone remembers this point above. When korea is president next year and we all scratch our heads, just remember this above point. And this is what the majority chose to have lead them. By not voting, one is no less responsible for the outcome. Taiwan seems to be always getting lazier, if not dumber. But certainly more lazy and entitled. Taking a day off work unpaid isnt a sacrifice, it is a privelage. No excuses guys…

I view this election as a very serious awakening on what the culture here really cares about. More than before. This includes not showing up due to…whatever…

Edit. Does anyone have a link for a youtube video of the entire debate? Not a news/opinion show, just a full video of the debate without media related opions. Want to discuss with family before elections.

Where is Guy complaining about no US politics in the Taiwan thread? :joy:

Guy noticed that this long post actually ended by observing how “US and Taiwan voter base/politics” are two different animals.

If I would complain about anything in that post, it’s the mixing up of “to” and “too.” : P

A Japanese pollster has Han within 5 points.

Third Debate
Soong is wearing his graduation robes, and is listing the courses he took for his doctorate:
American politics, political theory, comparative politics. Has his dissertation out. He isn’t casting doubt on Tsai’s doctorate, just saying one needs to provide evidence for things you do. Making a point about anti-infiltration law.

Says his wok as a representative of APEC and interacting with Pooh and reporting back to Tsai may be a violation of anti-infiltration law.

Han: Green energy is fine, but we need nuclear until green is cheaper. Buying it at the most expensive time is foolish. Furthermore, Tsai didn’t respect the will of the people.
There isn’t enough wind during the summer to generate wind energy.
Tsai During the summer we use solar, you idiot.

This is an interesting debate, since we’re hearing from two professors. Soong gives a political theory lesson, Tsai gives economics lesson.
Soong: Politics should be humane. Small matters for the people should be big matters for the government.
Tsai: On the cost of green energy use, startup costs for the US and the EU are higher than ours. When you reach a certain point in green energy use, it becomes cheaper and cheaper [This is called economies of scale in economics, where unit costs go down when you produce larger quantities.].

And both lessons are lost as Han repeats the key words media has flooded the population with: safety, hardship, peace, stability, trust me, Taiwan is doomed accept China you are Chinese, go back to the past…

Populist discourse, very effective unfortunately.

Not gonna happen. I’ll buy you a beer in the off chance Han Kuo Shu wins.

Coffee or tea or chocolate, preferably the latter for depression. Me no drinkie.

And if I did, Han winning would require that vodka/tequila stuff on a daily basis. I was trying to translate some of the stuff he said on the debate. .not enough words in the thesaurus…

um…

Why is this one more important than the rest?

Taiwanese people attach a certain prestige to Japanese products.

That doesn’t necessarily make it true.
