This morning I went out for breakfast. I had my meal and went to get my car that was parked in front of a shop that was closed. When I got to my car (20 meters away) the boss that had opened up the shop threaten to trash my car for parking there. I had just parked 15 minutes bro! :s And it was so early in the morning. 6:30AM! All he was doing was just arranging the shelves inside the merchandiseless shop. What a CHARACTER! :bluemad:
Anyway I should have picked a better spot to park. Not wanting to provoke :raspberry: him an apology was given and that’s that.
If you’re leaving, invite him to trash your car. These guys are all full of it. If you’re arriving, go park someplace else if you value your paintwork.
Perhaps he wants to park his own car there. Better make a note of which one is his, so you can be sure not to scratch it, or accidently drop a beer bottle through its window.
Welcome to Taiwan. People are pretty territorial about “their” space in front of their buildings. If I had a 100 NT bill for every time I’ve seen a local go ballistic over someone’s scooter or car parked in “their” territory.

You foreigners just don’t understand Chinese culture.
Might be worth noting, that local shopowners have the ability/right, though few seem to know about it or use it, to have you vehicle towed away. Had it happen to me once.
No they don’t. Not unless it just so happens that you are parked on a red line too. If you are inside the white line then you are in public space. Same thing applies to the little covered walkway area outside most stores, it too is public space. Some a$$holes paint their own red lines or put up their own towaway area signs and most cops don’t know the reality of the situation.
Bassman, have had it happen to me once, and seen it quite a number of times, both the guy at the impound yard and the policeman we spoke to said that the shopowners had some ability to enforce this.
Maybe it is Taipei only, not sure on that, experience is only for here
I think that if there’s a parking space painted outside a business, the owner can’t stop people parking in it, and you’ll get fined yourself for hogging the space with any of the usual barriers. When there’s enough space to park between the curb and the white line… no idea what your rights are there.
Mod Lang,
Don’t be angry. You should thank them. It’s a good opportunity to show off a bit of muscle. You just pick up the end and swing the scooter around; it works best one-handed.

That’s what I usually end up doing. If they get upset about me laying hands on their scooter, well tough luck. I’m not the one illegally stealing another parking space.

Maybe I should’ve done it the Chinese way and threaten to trash his vehicle. :fume:
I’ve noticed that being as mean as the Chinese will get you some RESPECT but will make you an unhappy person. I do try to be NICE cause that makes me a happier person.
Of course you don’t have to be mean with with civilized Chinese… They do understand mutual respect.
Shop owners get all nasty when they feel that their “right” and ability to maximize profit gets impeded by impertinent morons, i.e. the rest of us. Of course if you indicate that you would like to patronize their shop they get all nice again. $$$
Best way to hurt these people is to hurt their pocket. Tell others to boycott this “road-hog” store.
Ya…but almost every car-wash business, some store and/or residential area is like this around the island. Can’t be boycotting every place…it would hurt them a little but in the long-run you’ll be paying the price. There are many places that you can’t PARK unless you don’t care about what happens to your car or yourself. Empty parking spaces here and there but who really DARES to park there? GANGSTERS!
I will just complain about this(on forums/to friends)but will not try to confront them and try to teach them a lesson that will never be learnt if it ever happens again. If I did then in return I’ll be the one learning something when I wakeup in the hospital with serious head injuries wondering where I was.
If you get into any trouble here in Taiwan…either show respect and offer apologies or be the meanest person :fume: on the face of this earth and by some miracle survive the incident to live another day here. Your days will be numbered or maybe not!
