✈ 🎫 Tickets | What if name on passport and ticket is different?

I’m going to be flying from the US to Taiwan via China Airlines in the near future. My passport has my full name including my middle name. I checked my air ticket and it only has my first and last name.

I was just told by a friend that there might be a problem at the airport when security checks the name. Did anyone here have this issue?

It’s possible. I’d go amend it

Call China Air ticket hotline in US during its office hours. If on hold, just wait.

Doesn’t matter. I never put my full name on my ticket.

Its quite expensive for me to add in the middle name. They basically have to reissue the ticket to me and then charge me the current rate of that ticket.

Man, I hope you’re right.

Should be fine I reckon. My full name is way too long to fit on a ticket. Most flak I’ve gotten from Taiwan immigration was mild frustration over how damn long my name is lol

Is fine and normal. Last time a bought a ticket from Taiwan they didn’t even have the option to add a middle name

You have to put any middle names in the first name field:

That’s how I always book and I’ve never had an issue. YMMV.

I have an extremely long full name (surname is hyphenated) which never completely fits on a ticket. It’s never been a problem flying into or out of Taiwan
However, for domestic flights in Taiwan the check-in clerk will often handwrite my missing name components on the boarding pass.

Look on the China Airlines website and it gives examples of how names should be shown. In short, name on ticket MUST match passport name without any notional characters or spaces between Christian names.

My partner found out the hard way with Malaysia Airlines a few years back when they refused to issue a boarding pass. Had to cancel and pay for a new ticket - at a higher price.

Also check the conditions attached to the ticket and see what it says about
Name Change being permitted or not.

Good luck!!!

This is what I’m afraid of. When I asked about reissuing my ticket I was told it’s about US$700.

I used to not put my middle name on my air tickets and didn’t have a problem until I used Air Macau, who made me buy a new ticket on the spot and wouldn’t accept the old ticket due to missing middle name. It was close to Chinese New Year so it cost about 800 USD for the new ticket, same seat. Maybe airline is incentivized to do this for extra profit since they don’t refund the old seat. I am not sure if your airline is as anal about it.

I’ve never had any issues with North American airlines about this. Asian airlines I find tend to be more strict and policy driven. Scoot Air wouldn’t let me carry on my carry on luggage due to slightly being overweight (who even weighs carry on luggage these days?) and charged me 1 baggage fee for it.

Google brings up loads of stuff about whether middle names are required on flight tickets. I’m pretty sure I’ve left mine off some before. My recollection is it’s generally not required. China Airlines might be different, but I’d be quite reluctant to pay US$700 just to add it.

Relax. Trust me. They don’t care. You’re flying from the US, right? If you really want, call the airline and add your middle name.

What airline?

Source - It’s my job I’m a corporate travel agent.

This is often the procedure for name correction for most airlines.

90% of the time missing middle names is not a problem, 10% chance it is (anecdotal only).

It’s up to you whether you want to go ahead with the correction or not. If it was me, I wouldn’t bother.

Disclaimer- the spelling is more important than middle names. If your surname and first name are spelled correctly and not juxtaposed then it should be fine to not have middle names

China Airlines going. Coming back it’s China Airlines and a JetBlue connecting flight.

I was thinking to just show up and take my chances. If they force me to change the ticket then I probably will.
