But HOW is that wrong? How can it POSSIBLY be wrong? Its my opinion. Judging from the responses in this thread, its an opinion shared by the vast majority of people. Computers to me ARE boring. To me, its like taking an unhealthy attitude toward your fridge or your iron. They’re household appliances, nothing more. Vitally important, sure, but mere appliances nonetheless.
And as far as I know, the very DEFINITION of “geek” is a computer enthusiast.
Edit: the dictionary definition is “A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits.”[/quote]
It is not POSSIBLY but CERTAINLY wrong to compare interest in computers with train-spotting our collecting stamps. I can unfortunatly not find the majority on this thread following you on this…
the Computer (object of geekness in your definition) is something which will open a new world for my 67 Year old father, being thenthousand miles away from me here.
He is not a geek, but is like many older people captured in a certain boredom, which could be playing cards, watching pigeon races etc.
Is he a geek , do you think he is simple minded? of course not. He embraces change, something which might not be your current interest.
Not being harsh here, but for many people (like being paralized from top to toe), the computer IS their own remaining link with the world, their beloved ones…
Even comparing a computer with a vacuum cleaner or a toaster makes no sense though… Nice discussion it is, but your opinion remains your opinion ![]()
