At a time when politicians in Japan are trying to justify visits by PM Junichiro Koizumi to a Tokyo war shrine which honours several class-A war criminals, it has come to light that the Emperor himself disapproved of the shrine. This does little for the credibility of Koizumi supporters. Leaks from the Hirohito household’s chief steward attest to the emperor’s disapproval of the induction of 14 war criminals to the shrine in 1978 and that he never visited the shrine again.
