Toilet training for cats

I am currently taking care of two rescued cats. They are about 3-month old and healthy, cute, and energetic. They had strayed on street for months and they poo and pee wherever they like, so they don’t have the habit to use litter box. Now they poo and pee wherever they like in my guest room. How can I train them to use litter box?

Non of mine ever needed training, they just knew. Give them a litter tray and show them where it is (Put them in it), they’ll know what it’s for.

Yeah, I’ve never seen that either. I’ve adopted strays and kittens and never had to teach them to use the litter box.

On the other hand, a cat who is ill may pee and shit anywhere. I’ve experienced a few cases like this.

Thanks.

But I have given them litter box and shown them and put them into the box. They still don’t use it. :ponder:

And they are healthy, well, according to the vet who helped us.

Best to watch them and as they are about to do it put them in the litter box. Alternatively, once they’ve pooed, take the poo and put it in the box and take them to it. They generally will instinctively bury it. Once they’ve done it the first time, they will always use the box.

Try keeping them in a small area, one room or on a large covered balconey with a litter box until they get used to it. They are only 3 months so they don’t need a lot of room to run around. You don’t want cat pee on things as once a cat pees he thinks that is always a spot he can use.

But like the oters I have never had to do more than show them the litter box once. If you still have problems try a different sand. They may not like what you are using.

Generally, cats pee outside the litter box for one of these reasons:

  1. They don’t like the type of litter used. Maybe it gets stuck in their paws and then becomes uncomfortable or maybe they don’t like the scent. Cats are extremely sensitive to scents. Try different litter or just some shredded newspaper.
  2. They don’t like the litter box. Maybe it’s too small, too big, too deep… If it’s enclosed, try leaving the top off for now.
  3. They don’t like where the litter box is located. Maybe too noisy, too dark, too close to where they eat or like to sleep… if they like to pee in the corner behind your desk, then you should place the litter box there during training. Then you can slowly move the box when they get used to it.
  4. They don’t like to pee and poo in the same litter box. Some cats need 1 box for pee and one for poo.
  5. Some cats pee outside the litter box to mark their territory. You need to really clean that area good because cats have a great sense of smell and if there is any scent left of their urine they are likely to pee there again.
  6. They are trying to tell you there is a medical problem. Some cats get urinary tract infections or feline lower urinary tract disease. Both of these can cause them to not use the litter box.
  7. Stress. Any change in routine or anything that could cause them stress could also cause them to not use the litter box.

Try this: clean up some of the cat pee with newspaper and then split that newspaper in 2 separate litter boxes, one with litter, one with more newspaper. Place each box in different parts of the room. Remove anything you can from the room that already has cat urine smell. From there, it might be easier to determine what the cause is and therefore how to fix it.

Good luck!

Thanks for those helpful replies to my question.

hrm  maybe your litter box is too small, so it’s hard for them to poo, cover them up without standing on it

cats likes to keep it clean  if it has a chance to dirty their paws with poos n wees, they’ll hide it somewhere else instead ;D

and sometimes if the litters were covered by pees, even there are no poos in it , the cats won’t use it cause it’s smelly~

another thing i found out is that if the litter boxes are too shallow, they get pissed off too :aiyo:

and the last thing, some cats doesn’t like to share litter boxes :roflmao:

and just now i realised everything i wrote has been covered by Ladybird   hehehehehehehehe

as for that toilet training thinge… i heard you’re suppose to let the cat see you poos n wees there, so they’ll know they have the option to do so :unamused: but … i’m super shy hahaha

My cats will pee or poo with some encouragement. Take them to the box , one at a time and say pee pee over and over and they often do try to do that. My present cat poos once a day and pees bout 2 times a day. So if he hasnt poo-ed I will take him to the box and coax him, he will make an attempt usually.

I had a rabbit (named rabbit of course) who would run free in the house but would go to his cage in the toilet to peee. His pee stank a lot so he liked us to flush the floor with water (the cage was next to a drain) as soon as possible. So he would pee on command too. I would say

RABBIT PISSOIR . and he would take a whizz.

Talk to em, they often listen.
