Tongyong Pinyin for Zhongxiao

What would be the Tongyong Pinyin form of that much loved main road 忠孝 (Hanyu Zhong1xiao4)?

Thanks in advance.

The current version of Tongyong would spell it Jhongsiao. A previous version of Tongyong had it spelt Zhongsiao. The next version is anybody’s guess. :unamused:

Thanks for that.

I asked because a company website, arphic.com.tw/ has it’s address listed as:

13Fl.-1301, No. 88, Sec. 2, Jungshiau E. Rd., Taipei, 100 Taiwan

Now, this had me gobsmacked, because this company put out some TrueType fonts for Chinese… and although knowledge of Pinyin isn’t directly linked to what they do, I would have thought the level of sophistication involved with putting together a font package would indicate some wider knowledge of internationalization/multi-lingualization in computing, and Pinyin’s small role in it.

Even if they were using Tongyong, they would still have been wrong, because they would have had to follow Taipei City convention, not their own. But just in case, that’s why I asked about Tongyong.

I doubt they could even blame a third party who put together the English version of their page, because the version no. on the webpage seems to indicate they put it together inhouse.

Sloppy work from a company that provides the Chinese fonts for GNU Debian Linux. :loco:

It would be nice if the next version of TYPY spelled it “Zhongxiao”!

Welcome to Taiwan, where standards, rules, and conventions are entirely optional. Especially when it comes to romanization.

Oh, there is a good side to it, like the “traffic suggestions” (never dare call them “laws”)!

On a more serious note: could that company’s offering be some variation of Wade-Giles? Or an attempt thereon?

Jungshiau is the correct romanization using MPS2 - the official romanisation from 1986 til a few years ago. It is still evry common around Taiwan.

Oops. This thread almost slipped through my net. Thanks. That explains it then. Well, then I was harsh on them. They are adhering to a standard, regardless of it being outdated.
