Top 10 Motown songs

We haven’t had a good Top 10 List here for a while, here’s another.

Honestly, people, we all know this list ought to be a Top 100, 'cause the Hit Factory had so many great songs, but lemme try and whittle it down. And yes, I know…“I can’t believe you left (insert Holland-Dozier-Holland track here) out!”

In no particular order:

  1. Where Did Our Love Go? - The Supremes
  2. Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
  3. Heatwave - Martha & the Vandellas
  4. Let’s Get It On - Marvin Gaye
  5. I Want You Back - the Jackson 5
  6. Superstition - Stevie Wonder
  7. Papa Was a Rolling Stone - the Temptations
  8. Beechwood 4-5769 - the Marvellettes
  9. There’s a Ghost in My House - Roger Dean Taylor
  10. War! - Edwin Starr

There is just no possible way to narrow such a list down to 10 cuts, absolutely no way.

I’ll go along with your #5, #6, and #7, but I think you have got to stick Tracks of My Tears by Smokey and That Lady by the Isley Brothers in there somewhere…Who’s that lady…real FINE lady…

No Marvin Gaye

The list needs reviewing…

Good list…but no James Brown? Nothing for the GoDFather of Soul?

And also Aretha Franklin, The Queen of Soul, is absent…so many great ones…10 just isn’t enough.

By the way, if you like Soul Music, Dangermouse reccomended the Viriginradio.com site. It is EXCELLENT…one channel is devoted to Soul Music.

I highly 2nd his recomendation…excellent!

James Brown and Aretha were not signed to Motown.

  1. My Cherie Amour – Stevie Wonder
  2. I Was Made to Love Her – Stevie Wonder
  3. When Sundown Comes – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
  4. Ooh, Baby, Baby – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
  5. My Mistake – Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye
  6. You Can’t Hurry Love – Diana Ross and the Supremes
  7. Bernadette – The Four Tops
  8. You’re All I Need to Get By – Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
  9. Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing – Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
  10. My Girl – The Temptations
  1. Let’s Get It On - Marvin Gaye
  2. I Believe When I Fall In Love - Stevie Wonder
  3. Tears of a Clown - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
  4. Ain’t Too Proud to Beg - The Temptations
  5. I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
  6. I Want You Back - The Jackson 5
  7. My Guy - Mary Wells
  8. Upside Down - Diana Ross
