Traditional Folding Fan

I’m surprised not to have come across these more often in Taiwan, as they seem much more readily available in Japan and Korea. Anyone spot these? Decidedly prefer the folding style, even for men if not too floral and bright, over the paddle version. Looking to purchase. Thanks in advance.

They are everywhere, when you’re not looking for them.

I suggest that you find the shops/places that hand inscribe on the fan you pick. I have a great one I picked up about 15 years ago on a trip here. It was inscribed then, and I didn’t really care at the time. But it’s great to have now as a memory.

Exactly, I’m certain that’s the case. I’ve several friends who are accomplished calligraphers…would be wonderful to locate plain/blank fans and work out something for the right person or occasion.

There’s a handicrafts center outside NTU Hospital station. I would be surprised if they don’t have these there. Check the MRT map.

Saw some today. Thought of this thread.
Try browsing a night market. You’ll probably find some there.

+1 on night markets.

Try looking at tourist heavy destinations as well! The memorial halls, 101, Yong Kang Street, shops next to famous restaurants too! You never know.

The traditional market next to NTU hospital has them but I don’t think they do calligraphy. There are some shops across from Guanghua electronic market at the old Jade market that has them and will do calligraphy

I’ve seen them in $10 NT shops, e.g. in the Donghu wet market. The calligraphy supply shops near Shida should have some blank paper ones too. And the Gov’t handicraft mart, which Tango42 mentioned, and the National Palace Museum gift shops should have ones with Chinese motifs like calligraphy on them.

The 10 NT shops will probably have cheap ones made out of crappy paper and low quality steel or plastic, and maybe good for practicing on. But the good ones made out of wood are the ones worth writing on.
