Ever heard of Triops? It’s like sea monkeys, but better! It’s kinda cool to raise them from birth and watch them get big really fast!
I made a video diary - really short. It’s shows from set-up to adult. Adult in around only 12 days! But then again, they only live for a couple of months. Anyone have these beside me? Aren’t these the coolest pets ever?
Any hobby store - or Toys r Us, wal-mart, hobby lobby - I see these just about everywhere. Even gift shops. Ebay and Amazon should have some too. Try getting the TOYOPS triops. They have a guarantee that if the first doesn’t hatch, they’ll send you another 2 batch!
Look at this! Huge triop! 5 feet in length! But I doubt the ones grown at home will ever get this big!
From that photo it looks like it’s almost certainly related to the Horseshoe Crab, which is an awesome creature, leftover from before the dinosaurs. We used to see lots of them when I was growing up on the Long Island Sound, in NY. They’re perfectly harmless creatures, and very beautiful and existed for eons, but it wasn’t unusual to find one that some bastard had smashed and killed for no reason at all.

That’s a mistranslation from the Russian source, It’s only a few inches in length (5 cm or so) but there were apparently 5 foto in the package (foto → foot in a copy edit mistake).
Look at the way the water tension shapes the water over the pieces of sand to the right of the picture for an appreciation of the scale.
No Triops gets much bigger than a few inches.
They’re found in many parts of the world but not in Taiwan, so probably arose before Taiwan was pushed up from the ocean. Therefore, please don’t dispose of unwanted triops in the nearest river thinking you’re doing them a favour!
Triops and members of the class of Xiphosura (horseshoe crabs) are not related. Triops are a kind of shrimp, while the closest relatives of horseshoe crabs are the arachnids, spiders and scrpions, etc. The similar shape is a case of convergent evolution.
Nice video and music. I kept fish for a while but my favourite were the shrimp that I put in there with them. I’d also like to keep hermit crabs but seems they are taken from the wild.
I got hermit crabs too! I guess I have a thing for unusual pets. I never had normal pets like dogs and cats. I’ve had hermit crabs for 5 years now! I didn’t know they live this long! I know many people who only had hermits live for a couple of months. Mine are years!
Here’s my smallest one - Tip. He eventually got out of the yellow painted shell and moved to a natural shell.
5 feet would be scary, but 5cm is too small. I’ve observed my triops and the legs and bone structure on this picture just seems massive. A normal triop features doesn’t look like that - maybe 5 inches instead of 5 feet? But it has to be bigger than a normal triop.
