What is trolling? By whoms definition should we go by? It’s interesting if you think about it.
If you make a comment in a post that others don’t like or find offensive, you are labeled a troll. It doesn’t matter if you think it’s fine or not, if one person doesn’t like it, your a troll.
If half find something funny or interesting and the other half find it offensive or dumb then who is right? It’s usually the louder and more vocal of the two. Which in most cases are the offended.
So if you make a reply to get a reaction and your a troll isn’t the OP just as guilty? The person who started the post made that post…just to get a reaction, either to find others who agree with him/her or to let others know their stance no matter what people think. But they are both the same.
So basically I’m saying trolling is in the mind of the beholder(or betroller).
You’re just putting this up to get a rise out of me, ergo, you’re a troll.
Troll, troll, trolly-troll.
And man, I’ve been getting these killer headaches thanks to Forumosa. Now I know why, it’s because people are planting trolls in my mind. What do I take for that? Extra-strength Troll-Away, or just aspirin?
More seriously, mistakes and misinterpretations happen.
Assume the best, but be cautious and ask for clarification or changes when possible are my rules of thumb.
This is what the rules say:
Trolling is the deliberate posting of false information or insincere comments/questions in order to elicit responses from genuinely concerned people. Trolling does not encourage further discussion in the long run, it only encourages personal attacks (if left unchecked). Substance is the key to not being labelled a troll. We ask that you do not make postings which are deliberately intended to upset other participants, start inflammatory arguments or interrupt legitimate discussion.
I believe the bolded parts are the ones to especially watch out for.
Being labeled a “troll” doesn’t necessarily make one a “troll”, any more than being unjustly labeled a “racist” makes one a “racist”.
It may not be a matter of right or wrong, but more a matter of appropiate or inappropriate.
Again, being loudly accused of being a “troll” does not make one a “troll”.
Not necessarily. Again, it depends upon whether the OP’s statement was appropriate or inappropriate and whether your statement was appropriate or inappropriate. What determines the appropriateness of a particular statement? Several things, among which one is the particular Forum in which the OP and reply were posted.
Not necessarily. Surely you see a difference between OP posting in a Family Forum a method of kindly dealing with elderly parents who cause trouble for their children and second poster’s suggestion that troublesome elderly parents be put down.
Should have been posted under “Fragrant Meat.”
See, now here, in this thread, with this topic, you can get away with this. I’m not offended by the quoted post. As Tigerman explained, it’s a matter of appropriateness.
I think I’ll keep out of this discussion, especially if you still feel you need clarification over the dog bait post.
yeah…this could be a troll.
Air of superiority, refusal to obviously commit, aurora of superiority…maybe…maybe…
I’m not about to flounder this … yet. This has the potential to be a discussion, although quite why anyone would want to bother after reading Maoman’s post, which should answer your questions comprehensively …
But if anyone starts trying to post “troll-like” posts just to foment a flamewar I’ll flounder them. I won’t be seeking permission or PM-ing offending posters.
Read the rules. Abide by them. Hello. This is sandman. How are you? I’m fine, thank you.
