Typhoon Morakot flood victims need your help

This info was gathered online by Dragonbabe. Please add to or correct it as you see fit.

There are relief efforts underway for the flood victims. Please donate clothing, bottled water, food (especially in forms not needing refrigeration or cooking, e.g. bread, easy-open canned goods, crackers etc.), milk powder, diapers, sanitary napkins, and other basic essential items by taking them to or mailing them to the collection point nearest you. Note that victims may not have facilities to cook or boil water, so some collection centers are asking that the public NOT donate instant noodles and similar foods.

In Taibei:

 1. There will be collection at Liberty Square (presumably at the main gate in front of the Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial) between 7pm and 9pm each night this week. The organizer is Luke of PTT Net Friends (0988-270-489). Volunteers are also needed to help receive and box donations during and after that window. Bring boxes and tape too.

And make sure you get signed or chopped receipts for any donated goods. Already stories are circulating about cunts pretending to represent charities who are accepting donations with the intent to sell them to flood victims.

DPP is also organizing volunteers and supplies, should you feel like circumventing the government and helping directly. If you are down south and own a truck they would love to hear from you.

That sort of thing should be punishable by death… preferably by a slow drowning in raw sewage. :fume:

I’ve just spoke to Luke. He said that it’d be better if you come with goods to send. They had about 200 people helping at the square last night, and it was actually quite enough.

Also, if you’re coming to help, please bring as many boxes as possible, and tape.

The collection is from 7 pm to 9 pm., but the boxing and loading of trucks will run later if if there are too many things to boxes and move to the trucks.

These goods will be sent to the collection point in Xinzhuang. So far they haven’t managed to reach Taidong.

I’ll post about where to send the goods for Taidong later, once I have the info.

The latest word on donations is that canned food, baby clothes, milk bottles and milk powder are also needed (in addition to the above-mentioned items).

Hello All,

I run a removalist company in Taipei and could provide boxes and logistical support. Is there anyone specifically I can contact to find out their needs?

Thanks

Aside a 1 MM NTD donation which the company I work for commited too, extra efforts from all Staff has been made to procure goods as listed above. A bag of rice does not cost you a lot, so buy 1 extra when you go shopping the next days!

For those whom can read Chinese, following organizations are credible - decreasing any scam risks when donating…
Hello All,

I run a removalist company in Taipei and could provide boxes and logistical support. Is there anyone specifically I can contact to find out their needs?

Thanks
Hi, yes, you could contact Luke of PTT Net Friends (0988-270-489). That is Taiwan’s largest BBS, a local version of Forumosa, if you will. It is a very, very large organization, and they have set up their own rescue supply effort. Tonight at the CKS Memorial, there must have been five or six hundred young people, mostly college student age, I’m guessing, plus the handful of old farts like me, receiving goods and loading trucks. I’m sure they could use boxes and logistical support. I guess you are fluent in Mandarin; if you need any help contacting them, please PM Dragonbabe.

EDIT: Sadly, one of the volunteers at the event has just posted that one of their relatives was on that chopper. :frowning:

By any chance is there anyone in/around Banqiao that will be heading that way (Liberty Square or other locations) tomorrow morning or night with a 4- wheeled vehicle? I can donate far more than I can transport on a scooter or on the MRT.
How are they getting this stuff down there, DB? I hope they have some slick logistics (as much as one can hope for).

I had the same problem, kage, so I bought a huge pile then hired a taxi to take me to the CKS site. It’s amazing how quickly four or five hundred eager young vultures can unload one hapless taxi!!!

The Gaoxiong government is flooded with items, and is requesting cash donations instead, at:
高雄市社會救助金專戶 高雄銀行公庫部 帳號:102103031319

If you mail the needed items at the post office to the locations where the Red Cross is located in Jiayi, Tainan and Gaoxiong, the postage is FREE! If you mail goods to the Pingdong and Taidong County Govts., the postage is also free, but you will need to write down the contents and purpose on the box in Chinese, e.g.

救災包裹
. You can print that out and tape it on if you can’t write Chinese, btw. The relevant Post Office announcement is here:

Slick, no. Volunteer truck drivers, rented or volunteered trucks and other vehicles (including a tour bus) and so on. Very piecemeal, but people lined up in the freakin’ HUNDREDS to help. The community spirit on display was truly impressive, and moving. They were setting up a caravan of vehicles to haul stuff. Medium to large trucks and their qualified drivers are DEFINITELY needed, so if anyone has connections there, please, please step up to help.

T-cat shipping company has provided four twenty-ton trucks for shipping the goods to Taidong and other places!

Items still needed: (please send in sealed boxes, and also write what is contained on the box)
Baby goods (milk powder, plastic milk bottles etc.), adult goods (milk powder, diapers)
Sleeping bags, rain coats, flash lights, batteries, sanitary items (towels, tooth brushes, tooth paste), slippers
Cleaning tools (brooms, dust pans, shovels),
Personal sanitary stuff
Rice, canned food (easy-open ring-pull-tab cans preferred)
Instant food which doesn’t need to be cooked like instant noodles.
Second-hand clothes (especially children’s clothes), disposable underwear, blankets, quilts
Medical supplies (non-prescription, e.g. iodine, bandages, gauze, tape, etc.)
Cardboard boxes (medium and large sizes)

Confusion- does that mean I should or shouldn’t bring food and clothing to the Liberty Square/CKS tonight? Any word if they will still be there tonight? Thanks.

Dragonbabe listed some stuff that is still short. Here is my google translator service for labeling the boxes. It would be fabulous is a real translator could edit glaring errors. Thanks heaps.

Baby goods (milk powder (嬰兒奶粉), plastic milk bottles 奶瓶 etc.),
adult goods (milk powder 奶粉, diapers 尿布 )

TVBS is conducting a fund drive. CTI will have a concenrt benefit to receive donations on Friday. Several big companies have already contributed billions of dollars.

It feels good when we are all pushing in the same direction.

What that meant was that if you are mailing things to the various locations given earlier, you should mail them to one of the other locations rather than directly to the Gaoxiong government, which needs cash now rather than goods. Other locations still need goods.

However, now that you ask, the Liberty Square/CKS location was also so flooded with goods as of last night that they are (at least temporarily) ceasing collection. So:

Don’t mail items to Gaoxiong.
Don’t take items to CKS.

Do mail items to the other locations above, and
DO donate cash to the above account (the Chinese line in the above quote).

Huge thanks, again, DB and DB!

Oh, just to clarify, the line about not mailing items to Gaoxiong was based on word of mouth. I would still go with sending cash by ATM or wire if sending to Gaoxiong, but what the Taipei Times is reporting is slightly different:

taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/ … 2003450951
Huang Chao-huan (黃招換), deputy director-general of Kaohsiung City Government’s Social Affairs Bureau, estimated that at least 40 busloads of goods were distributed to disaster-affected communities around the county on Monday and yesterday.
Huang said the city government was no longer accepting bottled water and hot food at the moment but was still accepting other items.

Tainan County’s donation center said it had received more than 1,600 boxes of bottled water but was in dire need of medical supplies, canned food and flashlights.
So if anyone has contacts with or the location of a wholesaler of (for instance) medical supplies that could be ordered by the case, and can mail a case each of iodine, gauze, medical tape and so on to each of the listed locations, that would be useful. At the PTT event last night there was a table of volunteers recording the incoming items as they were sorted, and when I asked them what they were most short of, they said medical supplies. (Obviously the donating public doesn’t have good access to bulk medical supplies.)

If you want to send cash from within Taiwan, I got the following info by calling the Taipei City Govt. just now (you may confirm the info by calling them at 1999 if you wish):

To send money via the post office: acct. 1889-8514
Specify the recipient as the 台北市政府 社會局 Taipei City Govt. Dept. of Social Welfare
State your name, address and phone
Under purpose, be SURE to write “協助颱風救災” or Help Typhoon Morakot Victims

To send money via ATM: 012 4117 411 131 181 442 (I triple checked these numbers)
On the ATM receipt, in a blank area, write your name, address, phone number and “協助颱風救災” or Help Typhoon Morakot Victims, then fax this to 02-8786-1499, then call 1999 to confirm that they have received the transfer.

I’ll try to dig up a SWIFT number and such in case anyone wants to wire money from abroad.

Just saw a message from Michael Turton in Taichung that he’s going to try and organize to buy enough medical supplies to fill his van and drive it down to Tainan tomorrow. He’ll be at Fubar tonight if anyone wants to donate some $

From PTT BBS, Emergency forum,

So far the collection point is full of itmes to be sent.

If you still have goods and things to donate, you can mail them to other places needed, or wait until things have settled down and send them in to places still need them.

There were two 17-ton trucks from T-Cat, one tourist bus, four 3.5-ton trucks and two cars at the Liberty Square to help transport the goods to Taidong!

Will update soon.
