Looking for suggestions for a month of health insurance while visiting CA, USA. I have an APRC and NHI. For context a single Nov 2025 Kaiser ER visit was $2100US which included a roll of tape, and bandages, without prescription. Anyone buy Taoyuan airport medical insurance, have an incident in the US, and get reimbursed for medical expenses once they returned? Thanks in advance
$2100 isn’t bad. The one I got from Cigna had deductible of $2k USD and cost about $300 USD a month. So if you had one accident in a month and had to submit a claim, the best you can hope for is $2300 out of pocket.
It’s helpful if you need surgery or catastrophic insurance, since Cigna has $1m+ coverage. A single night in a US hospital as an inpatient can cost $100k+.
Thanks for the perspective on US hospital costs. Mind blowing. If you have any suggestions please share. Thanks in advance
My parents have bought allianz in the past (I believe), but never had to use it. Straightforward enough to buy though. ![]()
As a general comment, don’t hit the ER in the US unless it seems absolutely necessary - it seems like you might have had a sprain or the like? Hit urgent care - even with insurance, the ER is going to cost you a grip if you’re not admitted.
I’ve been using https://overseasinsurance.brokersnexus.com/ but have yet to make a claim. I usually get $1mil coverage with a $2k deductible.
It seems like they are all resellers of the Patriot America plan — my only hope with OverSeas is they’d be helpful if I did need to make a claim (not yet proven one way or another).
I buy it with the assumption that any claim is going to be a GIANT pain in the ass, and if I was just needing antibiotics or something I’d just pay out of pocket for a $100 minute clinic visit or something. It’s “I accidentally cut my finger off” type of insurance.
(Note the fine print is you have to call them first if you are heading into the hospital with an emergency)
Yeah if you just need a roll of tape, then go to the corner grocery store and put it on yourself. Then find and go to the nearest urgent care place and let them put it on right.
Going to the ER for anything less than emergency care is never going to have a happy ending.
Try Insubuy. They may offer reasonably priced, temporary health insurance for non-residents in the US.
Diagnosed with shingles. Got no care at ER. Doc said anti virals were optional.
Ended trip early. Came back here and got great care for peanuts.
Get the vaccine. If you don’t believe me check the Reddit / Shingles bbs. It’s hell.
I got shingles on my back in my 20s and just slept on my side for two weeks while working overtime. Doc did not think it was anything serious.
You got lucky.
When I went the ER I was in serious pain.
I heard. I got both shots in 2022 after hearing folks my age warn repeatedly about shingles. The second shot was no fun, but still better than shingles I’m pretty sure.
I should do it this week.
