US Senator seeks to end dual citizenship for Americans

U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) has introduced a bill that would force Americans with dual citizenship to renounce other citizenships. Those who do not would have their U.S. citizenship cancelled (“An individual … who fails to timely comply with that paragraph shall be deemed to have voluntarily relinquished United States citizenship”).

It’s probably mainly grandstanding. And I don’t know how much traction this will get or how the U.S. Supreme Court would regard it, but these days it might be wise for Americans with dual citizenship not to take too much for granted.

Erection year nonsense. One could renounce their citizenship and still blow up the Brooklyn Bridge.

I don’t think this will have the firepower to pass (for now), but regardless - glad my wife and I decided to stay in Taiwan for the foreseeable feature. Imagine doing all that work to get citizenship in the US just for some cabal of hyper nationalist brown nosers to pass legislation that forces you to make this crazy choice a few months/years later.

Pathetic behavior.

And there’s no guarantee in Stephen Miller’s America that they can’t revoke that acquired U.S. citizenship at any time.

Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege — and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good,” Moreno said.

That’s all they got?

Foreigners in America with a powerful single-citizenship-only country already stop at US green card.

No need for US passport since the American military will still protect their home country

Foreigners in America with a weak home country passport have no problem renouncing

You mean Trump’s wife would have to renounce in order to stay in U.S. … and her parents who moved to U.S.?

And Barron… So no, this law will never pass

there is already solid precedent and SCOTUS cases showing that Congress cannot do this by statute but must pass a constitutional amendment. However, this SCOTUS is clearly a loose cannon.

EDIT: However, they can put strict limitation on naturalisation and paradoxically create a situation like TW, renounce first and then, since the person becomes a constitutional citizen covered by the 14th amendment as a naturalised citizen, that person can then resume his original citizenship(s) or naturalise again. Birthright and naturalised citizenships cannot be stripped by act of congress or decision of the executive.

Trumps administration has already loudly spokenthat they do not agree with their own constitution. Their supporters can take it or leave it, but it’s not up for debate.

As a load of Israelis are involved in US politics and pretend to be US citizens, it won’t happen.

So if this passes how will it effect people here?
One thing I wonder about is Taiwan requires children born to one Taiwan parent to take Taiwan citizenship and on first exit to use the Taiwan passport. So suppose the other parent is American an applies for US citizenship but can’t renounce the child’s Taiwanese citizenship or they can’t exit?

Right so kind of what Taiwan demands it’s foreign residents to do to pass it’s citizenship test.

Well… No. Not exactly.

How so what’s the difference ?

I guess that, or they’d tell you exit on the required Taiwan passport then reenter on the US one and then renounce the Taiwan one and get the child an ARC? Then at 21 they lose the ARC or switch to work ARC.

I actually think this is great.

I’ll happily put my own situation on the table: I have four passports. My youngest daughter also have four with my oldest only having three. And my poor wife? She’ll only end up with two! I genuinely feel bad for her.

And that right there shows how ridiculous this has become.

At some point, citizenship stopped meaning commitment and turned into passport hoarding. It’s no longer about belonging, responsibility, or loyalty, it’s about having backup plans, escape hatches, and the ability to switch flags when things get uncomfortable during a war.

You can’t seriously expect to collect passports like insurance policies and then demand full rights, protections, and moral authority from every country at once. You can’t, and shouldn’t have your cake and eat it too.

If you want to be American, be American or if you want to be Taiwanese, be Taiwanese. If you don’t, make the call and live with it. Clarity is healthier than this current mess where people want maximum benefits and zero consequences.

And yes, I’m glad I’m not affected, I’m not American. From the outside, this looks like overdue house-cleaning. Fewer loopholes, fewer professional fence-sitters, and fewer people crying oppression while holding half a dozen passports.

Whether it passes or not is another matter. But the idea itself? Completely reasonable.

Oh absolutely, people like me shouldn’t exist. Someone ending up with four passports is clear evidence the system is broken. It’s absurd, inefficient, and frankly stupid.

Do you know how painful it is renewing four passports? Four governments. Four sets of fees and four renewal applications… It’s a financial and bureaucratic nightmare that nobody else should ever have to suffer through. For the good of humanity alone, we should shut this down.

So yes, I genuinely believe everyone should only be allowed one passport. One country. One set of obligations. One set of consequences. No more identity juggling. No more escape hatches. No more moral gymnastics.

Of course, people like me and our children’s children should be grandfathered in. We didn’t invent the mess; we just navigated it legally while it existed. Punishing people retroactively would be pointless and unfair.

But going forward? Burn the ladder. Close the loophole. End passport hoarding entirely.
