We’ll be traveling to USA for the first time next week. Our destination is New Jersey but our flight is to New York (JFK).
As additional info, we’ll have a few short trips in NJ and or return flight is also from NY a few days later.
What’s the best way for the last leg of my trip, Uber or car rental? If rental, any recommendation?
I traveled by car mostly or by Public Transport, to me it depends where you will stay overnight and if it has free car park or not and where. The bridge tolls to New Jersey 18€ or more cash cheaper if e payment, not mention the tolls on the motorway. I was in Princeton, New Jersey so it was easier to drive. If going more urban areas maybe Uber/Public Transport might be easier.
Just be careful that car rental companies often have weird convenience charges, and the more evil ones charges the fee for each and every toll charges you rack up. It means you could end up hundreds or even thousands in those fees alone if you were unlucky. The standard fee is 30 dollars in addition to whatever toll you were charged. Paying cash for toll is no longer an option in many places.
Price: The Uber price was about the same as 3 days rental!
Convenience: Once we arrived at our destination, local rides were much easier than relying on availability of Uber drivers
Cons:
No rest: after a long flight, still need to drive for almost 2 hours
Traffic: lots of road renovations and detours, and the absence of metric system can be confusing even for the GPS
In the end, we opt for renting a car and I feel it was the right decision. But next time we may sleep near the airport first, and get the car on the next day.
