Uses of 才怪 cai2 guai4

example: 像你那麼機車的人會有女朋友才怪 - xiang4 ni3 na4 me5 ji1 che1 de5 ren2 hui4 you4 nu3 peng2 you cai2 guai4

  • Is ‘As if a nuisance like you will have a girlfriend.’ is a proper translation of the sentence above?

  • so is 才怪 cai guai only refers ‘yeah right!’, or ‘as if’?

  • are there any additional usages 才怪 cai guai that you can explain?

  • does 才怪 cai guai have something to do with ‘weird’ or ‘blame’?

thanks.

I can tell you the answer to that. PM me for my very reasonable rates. I’ll be happy to consider either consultation or tuition.

Cai2 guai1 !

There, ya see urch? Now you know how to use it.

Well you know, I was planning to outsource the “cai” to you and the “guai” to Ironlady, skimming a little off the top for my trouble. Bidness is bidness.

I’m really more of a guai4 person, to be frank.

for some reason i don’t quite get it… is my example even correct?

wahhhh…

You can think this sentence as “如果像你那麼機車的人會有女朋友,那才真是奇怪 .”
It means “it’s not possible…or the chance is very low…”

You think I’m giving you wholesale rates, Sandman? 才怪!

Yes.

thanks a lot guys!

Is urch the new mavericker? Are they one and the same person? Will he/she be allowed to ask any more questions? Will the friendly people on this forum continue helping him with his struggles of mastering Mandarin? Now, that would be strange (才怪).

If you’re a beginner, of course you’ll be asking lots of questions and contributing little in return. Mavericker simply wanted fast and easy translations for his comic book project. Urch appears to actually want to learn.

The best translation for caiguai:

Shyeah! As if!

 :bravo: Beautiful.

Not really connected to the theme of the thread, but whatever, you reminded me of this little gem:

hello guys i’m sorry for asking a lot of questions. don’t worry, i’m no mavericker . i’m just a beginner who still has a long way to go and the internet is my only source of learning as of the moment.

No they’re not. We mods can see the IP addresses. Urch is just a solo learner in need of some help. We’ve all been there.

Don’t worry about it urch. We’re not all grouches.

BTW, is it cai2guai4 or cai2guai1?

2 – 4

let me properly introduce myself… i’m living in the philippines and i’m 21 years old. recently became interested in studying conversational mandarin. been teaching myself for 3 months now. not enrolled in any mandarin classes. don’t have any books. i’m just using online dictionaries and continously watching taiwanese tv series like it started with a kiss… to absorb some colloquial way of speaking.
