WeChat isn’t transparent about when security lockout will trigger. Maybe they have certain conditions. Make sure there is an alternate way for you to contact them in case you trip the security.
Actually Chinese platforms aren’t transparent about lockouts at all. I have a friend who triggered a lockout for his taobao account without warning.
This is true:
Which is why this isn’t:
Your limited experience ≠ the experience of everyone, ever, every time.
So why is my experience different than everyone else’s? Actually when you changed phones, did you migrate the data or did you simply did it from a clean slate and tried logging in from your new phone without migrating? Or did you wipe the phone completely when you tried to login?
There’s obvious conditions but WeChat won’t tell you how to avoid tripping them.
Maybe WeChat changed their system recently, but again they won’t tell you either.
I don’t know. You seem to… encounter a lot of TL-specific difficulties. Point is I wouldn’t assume that it’s the same for everyone.
I didn’t wipe anything. I transferred all the data from the old phone to the new one using the PC app and/or WeChat’s migration option. I’ve done the same previously, and my chat history on my current phone goes back a few years now.
Okay this is my current experience.
I try to log in with my phone number with the previous account.
One of the first questions it asks to select from a list of countries which includes a country code.
There is no country code for Taiwan. So can’t even enter my phone number.
Man anyway I’m continuing to research maybe there’s a workaround.
Is it not Taiwan Region China or something like that
I’m sure it’s there man. Try Province of Taiwan under P, or Chinese Taiwan under C, or maybe you need to tap China first and then choose Taiwan.
Sometimes HK, Macau, China and Taiwan will be listed side-by-side instead of alphabetically.
It looks like you’re right actually. I’m still signed in with my Taiwanese phone number, which shows up in the app, but there’s no longer any option I can see for Taiwan (or similar descriptions):
(I searched for “86” in the screenshot to show the options that do come up, but I also tried “886” and “Taiwan”, which bring up nothing at all, and “Chin”, which doesn’t show Taiwan either.)
Can you sign in using your e-mail or username?
my region list has “Taiwan, China”
no. I can edit what Region am in. Has tons of countries. One is Taiwan, China
Yeah, it’s listed in the region setting, but how about the phone number setting? I think we’re talking about different things.
Well, still have WeChat message welcoming me back after gone for a few years.
My phone info does have “+8869…”
Why are you guys using weChat anyway? Do you chat with friends in China or something?
Yeah, use it to talk with friends and a work client in China. (I also used to live in China, which is when I installed it.)
Finally solved my problem of not being able to use a Taiwan phone number.
Was not possible in English. The only setting I could even change was the language.
So changed language setting to Chinese and then Taiwan pops up with an +886 option.
Went through the sign-in process luckily I remembered my old password. It’s still sent me an SMS during the sign-in process. For some reason it said this is a new device even though it’s not and I’ve used we chat on this device until I signed out recently.
Changed app back to English by going through the Chinese settings menu.
Surely everybody has a different situation so… not one size fits all and not one process works for everyone.
Why and when do I use wechat?
Works going back and forth with China
Taiwanese, Chinese, some other countries like to use it some
Discover > People Nearby capability. Can voluntarily see and be seen by and with other people. Which comes with a whole lot of other possibilities. Like meeting someone new for coffee, dating, hook ups… inside of Taiwan and outside of Taiwan.
