Can anyone recommend a good Vietnamese restaurant?
I sometimes run across VN restaurants - a good sign is often menus or displays in Vietnamese - but on entry I’m often disappointed. The food has invariably been “Taiwanned” and most of the customers seem to be Taiwanese.
Where do all the Vietnamese people go? There seem to be loads of them in Taiwan - either working in factories or married off to locals…
try siagon saigon, near the wang fang hospital station… comeout of the station and walk straight, cross the street, make a right at the first lane after the mcdonalds, it’s about halfway down the lane. It’s run by a chinese Family that lived in Vietnam for about 20 years. they are really nice and the food is good.
In the eastern suburb of Xi4zhi3 (汐止 aka Hsichih) there’s a pretty good, inexpensive one:
越南美食 Quan Com Viet Nam, open Tues-Sun 11a-9:30p
汐止市 康寧街 536-1號
Xizhi, Kang1ning2 St. #536-1
ph.2692-7015
Their business card says they also have branches in Chung-li (Zhongli) 中壢 (03) 425-5599, and Taichung (Taizhong 台中) (04) 2320-2775.
I have no idea how authentic the food is, as I’ve never been to Vietnam. But it seems pretty good to me.

The food here is pretty authentic. Been to Vietnam more than half a dozen times (both to Saigon and Hanoi) and it this is really close. I have heard and seen Vietnamese eating there many times. I think they prefer this one, because it is quite cheap, yet another clue towards its authenticity. There was another thread on Vietnamese restaurants before no?
There is a good “pho” near ChungHsiao YongChun MRT station (>5min by walk).
It’s very typical: it tastes good and it’s cheap. (BTW, don’t expect a “fancy” restaurant…Casual, right from the mekong delta :yay: ).
They also have hu tieu, bun bo, bun cha and co… to enjoy with a “tra da”.
Unfortunately, I only have the adress in Chinese:saywhat: , but I will try to explain.
Take the 2nd exit in the MRT. You should find yourself near a crossroad, on the N side of ChungHsiao E road. Take the street which goes north. Walk straight on (less than 3 min) till you arrive at a crossroad with a tiny park on the NW.
Turn left, walk 100 meters and you should see a red sign “Quan an Viet Nam”.
BTW, they don’t speak english, but they will be very glad to hear you mumbling a few words in Vietnamese.
The first place I thought of was Madame Jill’s. I’m surprised no one mentioned it.

Maybe the Mod could merge these?
I recently discovered a good one in Banqiao. All the dishes are under NT$100.
The name is Hong Que Qun An Viet Nam. It is at 20 Ren’ai Road, Banqiao.
It is not hard to find. Enter Ren’ai Road (it is just a small lane) from the Family Mart convenience store, near the Geant (Ai Mai) supermarket. The restaurant is about 50 metres down the lane on the right.

Hi wix, can you tell me where this place is in relation to, say, the train station in Banqiao? Or an MRT station? (There is another Vietnamese restaurant near FE21 called Pho Sai Con.)
I checked your “david on formosa” web site and was impressed. I liked your write up on the Vietnamese place with the beef noodles. I imagine it is the same restaurant since the date coincides with your post. I quite agree with your views vis-a-vis Thai food vs Taiwanese.

From the train station head along Zhongshan Road and then Sichuan Road to Tucheng. The Geant (Ai Mai) supermarket is a fairly easy landmark to find. Just before the Geant Supermarket there is a Family Mart convenience store. Enter the small road next to the convenience store and you will see the restaurant on your right.
Lots of buses go that way. From Banqiao Station you could take 245 Blue or 705. Those are the ones I know. There are several others that I can’t remember the numbers of.
Here is the address and name of the restaurant in Chinese:
Just to let you know…I’d probably do a list of totally illegal and socially psychotic things for a steady supply of GOOD Pho tai, nam, gau, gan, sach and guoi cuon.
I finally made it to Pho Hoa and I definitely third ac’s recommendation… I’m used to LA style pho (never been to Vietnam) and this is was delicious! Rare steak pho or grilled pork pho, both delicious, with a plate of fresh basil, lime and chilis. (pics and full thoughts on my blog)
For some reason most of the pho I’ve had here (other than Pho Hoa) comes with the wider noodles-- does anyone know why?
Though I think they don’t have the set menu anymore unless I’m missing something. Also wish they had summer rolls, but it’s okay, I found another place for that too.
PHO HOA
No. 43, Lane 190, Tunhua S. Road, Sec. 1
(02) 2751-5578
if you go behind Sogo, you want to find the lane with Bossini on the corner (near the playground behind the original Sogo). Or you can come in from ZhongXiao/Dun Hua.
I went to Madame Jill’s a few years ago and I don’t remember it wowing me and being a bit pricier.
curry noodles man…try the place near the corner of song-ren and zhuangjing (close to alleycats and wuxing st.)…3 vietnamese girls run this place and its great…

Went there (the one on Shi Jr) a couple of months ago and plan to go again today. Very good and reasonably priced. The decoration and the seating outside is also a nice touch.
Good luck to some of you in finding the place, though. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re driving and you have patience asking others for directions. But there are signs of a lake close by and I think there’s good hiking in the area too. It would be nice making a day in the area and finishing it off at the restaurant. Maybe when things warm up a bit. For today, a nice hot bowl of pho and some other things to round off the meal will hit the spot.

I noticed that Madame Jill’s has moved down to Xinshen S. Road, in case anyone is looking for it.
