I’m looking for (I think) a inexpensive and reliable service to receive OTPs on my Taiwan Bank account for those credit card transactions that require an OTP to go to a Taiwan phone number. My bank wont change my phone number to an international number and I want to be able to use my funds overseas via credit card online. They tell me I cant receive the OTP by email either.
Does anyone have any experience with these services?
Or is there another work-around like a Skype number or some other kind of service (free or for a small fee).
I am not sure this is available. I think probably not.
One alternative: keep a phone on a charger at a friend’s house in Taiwan with a working SIM card that is automatically forwarding SMS messages to email (using the friend’s WiFi). There is probably an app for that. You would not need to load much money onto the SIM. It could be a prepaid SIM. You would probably need to load a minimum of 100-200NT onto the phone every half year to keep it alive.
I have IFTTT appraise me if the price of oil goes up or down by x%. Unfortunately, I misconfigured it and I get updates about Colgate-Palmolive Company.
Yes my “workaround” would assume somebody, such as OP or one of his friends, would at one point be physically present to request a SIM.
By the way, it is possible to buy virtual DID ranges in Taiwan for businesses. I just do not think there is any such service for private individuals. I think this has been discussed in a prior thread.
I have the same problem with my Australian banks, my aus telco also cancelled my aus phone number I kept for this purpose (as they gave me incorrect information)
I haven’t found a solution other than trying to get the number back before it’s assigned to someone else
Usually, receiving text messages shouldn’t incur any roaming charges. So one option would be to find some mobile phone contract that a) supports roaming and b) is quite inexpensive. Costs could be around NT$100 or less per month.
Prepaid or one of those 200-300 nt monthly plans that includes text messages would work (not exactly sure on the prepaid). When I travel to the US I still receive text messages and I’m on a FET plan.
I also have a Numero E-sim # linked to the TW number to receive US texts. This won’t work with all banks unfortunately.
If you’ve got Apple phone and computer you can set up your Taiwan sim to your computer. That means it doesn’t matter where you are when you ask for the funds transfer but it still uses the Taiwan number.
Other than that get two phones. Text forwarding.
Weirdly enough this is something that my bank does let me do (overseas bank not Taiwan).
Seems this is just another reason to be difficult. I’m noticing it a lot more lately. Makes me happy I didn’t do that fairly large SWIFT transfer into Taiwan.
