VPN server and setup for when in China

Hi there, a friend is having troubles trying to use gmail, whatsapp, etc… in China. I recommended the obvious, to use some VPN and although my friend has installed some VPN client apparently things don’t work at all.

I’m guessing that the way to go is to use faster, more reliable pay per use VPN’s, but I wanted to know how you guys have dealt with this situation before, what specific VPN servers / applications you can recommend, etc…

Thank you everybody for your answers, very helpful. However, I just figured out that probably you don’t need any stupid VPN client or VPN at all, you can send your requests through a proxy and that’s all. I tested it in Windows 10:
