I present this one as tragic wack. Stuck without documentation on the Spanish island of Lanzarote for some 40 years, this man finally connected again with his family in Taitung.

Being married to a Spanish national and being the father of seven! Spanish nationals, he could have easily obtained legal residency in Spain, and then, nationality. It is wack.
It doesn’t seem like he, or his family, made any great efforts to rectify the situation.
No, he couldn’t. To obtain residency you need documents from your home country, such as a birth certificate. He didn’t have anything on him. Eventually he figured out a way for his documents to be mailed to him from Taiwan, after he reconnected with his father.
But yeah, surely he could have gone to the Taiwanese embassy and requested a replacement birth certificate, but it seems he was just a simpleton who didn’t know he could do that.
Ask yourself: what sort of family situation would lead a 17 year old to be on a fishing fleet on the other side of the world? Would this have happened to you? Why not?
With this context, a little more sympathy for this man would be appreciated.

Looks like his father dumped him there and he moved to a different area to evade his father’s later attempts to find him. Sad story all round. Wonder how long he will stay in Taiwan given his reported poor language ability and likely huge culture shock.

No way he moves back to taiwan,will be too alien to him now. I guess he just wants to connect with family members.
I doubt any of his kids will be moving to Taiwan either. The vibe is just too “ging” for most people from Latin cultures.
