Wack Things in Taiwan 2025

When we went to strawberry farm, they were super careful when they were putting the strawberries into the cardboard boxes.
However, since we paid like 2500NTD for about 2kg of strawberries, we picked ourselves, it is understandable.

Does anyone actually like the chicken here ?

I mean the cold one, skin on. Cleaved up and still with tons of small bones.

I don’t think its tasty at all and the small bones and bone fragments all over the place just get on my nerves.

My gfs family thinks I’m just doing the wai guo ren thing by being picky about it but in reality I thinks more of their problem than mine.

I don’t think the various preparations of chicken on this island are anywhere close to being at the top of my list of ā€œwack things in Taiwan in 2025.ā€

Regarding substandard food: perhaps one could just find a better restaurant?

Guy

I’ve noticed exactly the same thing.

Usually I have a backpack and obviously want to put the heavier shit at the bottom, packing them as the cashier scans them so I can get out of the way for the next person, so I find myself becoming increasingly irritated when the cashier keeps handing me eggs and beansprouts and whatever I’m clearly not going to want to put at the bottom of my backpack underneath two liters of milk and three kilos of washing up liquid.

@Malasang88, @afterspivak, and @Explant are always quick to defend the ā€œfoodā€

In such contexts I find it’s usually one of the better options. Soy sauce dip

Whoah watch out, Tempo—you may end up as part of one of @TT’s lists.

Guy

No I don’t like it. Drunken chicken or Hainan Chicken. It’s disgusting.

The former two can be incredible.

Add in a well prepared Kung Pao Chicken, and I’d have enough enthusiasm posting to annoy @TT for weeks.

Guy

That’s fine–I think @TT’s frequent ranting about Taiwanese food is a magnificent form of of performance art and I’d be proud to be included.

The mosquito crack didn’t get as much love as it deserved

You mean the popular ā€œsaltyā€ chicken - not to be confused with popcorn deep fried salty and peppery chicken bits without bones?

The one that’s practically raw, sold with assorted semi cooked veggies or mystery bits in some savory melee?

That one I agree is icky. However, chicken cooked in most ways is better with bones, IMHO. EXCEPT the above mentioned one.

That it is usually sold in a plastic bag does not help.

This type.

Basically just cold, tough, boiled chicken and soy sauce. 98% bones.

I’m fine with other types of chicken here. I love the wong zai ji chicken. This cold one though, no thanks.

Not only tough. Rubbery. Cold. That chicken did not want to die and took his revenge to the grave.

If it’s bloody that is somehow worse.

That looks really rough. Is that even chicken? Hard pass if so. My fam used to get a quite good one from the market, thick white meat, thin yellow skin, for big meals. Let’s just say it was a relative highlight.

I looked for a pic but couldn’t find one. I did find this, and how I’d love to get back up to Dinghu (near Zhuzhihu) for a plate!

Should include me in that except for it’s not possible to defend food in Kaohsiung.

The idea of the chicken on the bone is that it is fresh and non processed and you need to chew it off . Admittedly if the cook is bad at chopping they’ll get lots of little bone pieces, not great.
I don’t like when they just give you generic chicken breast in Indian places with no texture. Really don’t like that now.

But hey I did try a Shao La Cantonese chop shop again last week here and it was great . They had the usual marinated duck, chicken , pork, cantonese black sausage with shaoxing flavour. Real good.

How about this weather, though? Or easy access to Kenting or the mountains? Just, pack a sandwich

Man this weather today we don’t need California we got it right here.

Did they mean fart?

Although Taiwan has lots of excellent chicken, I fully agree this one is basically trash :face_with_peeking_eye:
