Is there some plastic bag mafia in Taiwan?

Sure getting a lot of attention and urgent action.

What happened to a single use plastic ban by 2030?

Taiwanese fried chicken scented face masks (the kind for supposedly beautifying your face, not for breathing through). They come in other, um, flavors as well.

What’s with storekeepers and clerks just abandoning their stores for up to half an hour? It’s not uncommon I’ll walk into a store and no one is there. No one is in the back, no one is in the front, it’s just totally empty. This seems most common in malls with open storefronts. It’s great Taiwan is a high trust society (in this regard at least) and they feel comfortable leaving their store open and not worrying about someone looting half their goods, but if I were a boss and my employee is just abandoning his post while frustrated potential customers walk out, then I’d fire him. I don’t get it. At least lock the door and leave a note indicating when you’ll return. Unprofessional to say the least.

Remember when they tried to make paper straws a thing and everyone was like “nope” as it just became a soggy mess that’d collapse in on itself after a few sips? That was a fun few months in ecowankery.

It’s not tricky or complicated—just don’t use straws. If you have a proper cup or mug you don’t need them.

Instead of having proper shifts or hiring more people, these outfits will have one (1) person working. They go to get lunch, they go to the washroom . . . their kid or an elderly relative is sick . . . all manner of real life issues come into play and affect how the shop is staffed, or not.

Just to be clear, I am not saying I adore or even like this system. But based on what I’ve heard I can get a glimpse of why things look so irregular or unprofessional to us from a consumer perspective.

And yet they still used plastic cups for the most part. It was performative.

Someone is being “unprofessional” … sounds like it’s the owner/boss and not the employee though.

If it’s the owner / boss, then yes that’s a good incentive to take my business elsewhere.

Your confusion, my illusion
Worn like a mask of self-hate, confronts and then dies
Don’t walk away

This is perfect for this topic :joy:

I’m relieved “prostrate themselves” wasn’t what I thought it was at first.

When you convert the balcony into a room for your “foreign workers” and now there’s no space outside for the aircon…

I consider dumping trash at a trash collection spot even though they are closed to be VERY considerate.

Could of thrown the trash into the woods, river, random spot down the street, etc. like lots of other people.

Reminds me of a time when first arrived in Taiwan.

An old woman on a scooter hit my left front car fender while I was sitting at a stop light. Her groceries went flying and fruit was rolling around the road.

She was up, gathered her groceries, and sped off before I could even get completely out of the car.

As she looked back I noticed she had an eye patch on her right eye :face_with_peeking_eye:

Brake failure in Taiwan is synonym for failure to brake.

Do you mean you would not trust this mechanic? I guarantee you he will find a tool when he needs. It might just not be the tool he needs.
