My girlfriend is graduating in August and wants to come start looking for work, but we just realized it takes 12-16 weeks for the degree certificate to arrive in the mail. She talked to the school, and they said they can provide her with her transcripts and a degree verification form, which is sufficient for getting a job requiring proof of degree back in the States. Will she be able to get a job with this here, or does she have to wait three months to come?

She probably won’t be able to get a legal job so it would be better to wait. It might work but it’s going to be difficult explaining anything out of the normal routine. From what i can tell anything out of the normal is unbelievably difficult to understand at a buxiban (with the boss). But you could come a month before they will arrive and start looking for a job and do some traveling. This of course assumes that you have some money which might not be the case since you are fresh out of college.
Well, it’s not really an issue of explaining it to the school, is it? Isn’t it just a matter of if the government office will accept that document in place of the official certificate? There must be somewhere I can officially inquire about this, right? Or is it only the school that wants proof and the government will issue an ARC to whoever the school sponsors?
The school processes all of the paperwork (at least in my case) and they won’t know what the hell to do with your document. And it’s likely that the gov’t office won’t either.
This issue has come up before so maybe there is someone that has been successful submitting a document instead of a degree.
The GOVERNMENT wants the degree. The government doesn’t want a doc. that says that the degree is pending.
I did this same thing when I graduated from undergrad school. I got the dean to sign a copy of my degree–which had not been printed yet–they printed out a plain paper, black and white copy of what my degree would look like. He wrote a note on it saying that this degree was pending and that the document he was writing on was to help in getting a job.
In my case, however, I sent that ahead of me to S. KOREA. By the time I got there, I had the real degree with me. It took a lot of sweet talking to the dean. I still had to wait for the degree before I left. But for me, this worked out and I at least had a job to go to and didn’t have to spend further time and money looking for a job and a place to stay.
But that was many years ago–and that was S. KOREA. And this is Taiwan.
Hmm, ok. Sounds discouraging, but just in case, where would I officially inquire about this? Immigration office?
Ministry of Education are the ones who want your degree. Good luck trying to get a coherent answer from them! Or even an answer. Taiwanese government ministries and agencies typically don’t even respond to emails, specially ones written in English.
Indeed. Their website does not appear to provide a location outside of Taipei, is that the only place I can physically go to inquire?
