Wanting to Buy Some Decent Computer Speakers

My wife and I watch more and more things on the Internet, so it’s time to upgrade our computer’s speakers. Right now, we just have two of those little Logitech things.

I’ve never been one for surround sound or the latest-and-greatest, so I’m not looking for top-of-the-line or anything like that. Our computer is at least four years old, and it’s pretty basic. We’d like something that is quite clear. Clarity is our main requirement, but not at too ridiculous of a price. I’d like it to be able to connect to an MP3/4/5 player, maybe even a TV (if that’s possible at a fair price).

What brands are good? What brands should be avoided? What system requirements should I be aware of on my computer? What features should I be looking for in a set of speakers?

I don’t even know what kind of a budget I should be setting. We were at Carrefour today and saw some cheap ones for just under $2,000NT. I’m guessing we’ll have to be paying more than that for what we want.

I’d appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Thanks.

How much do you want to pay?

I am using Logitech speakers. Each mini tower has two cones within. There are two mini towers and one base box. I have tried hundreds of different brands and I can honestly say that for the price I don’t think Logitech can be beaten.

The most modern Logitech equivalent to mine I think must be these

They should also be around the 2-3 thousand mark.

Logitech is my brand of choice as well. Good quality at a reasonable rate.

Another  for Logitech. Good value for the money.

You also might want to confirm the quality of your sound card. You don’t have to spend a lot of $$ to get a really good one now-a-days.

You also might want to see if you can find any MicroLab speakers here. I’ve got a basic set, 2 speakers and a bass box that do very good on music and movies.

There are some very expensive set-ups out there, 4 speakers, center-speaker, bass box, etc., that are cool, but really, the question is, What will work the best for what your listening room and needs will accommodate?

(I’m also a cheapskate who likes good sound)

Back in the States, I would go with Klipsch. Specifically their ProMedia line. Not the GMX line, just the normal model.

However, I don’t think Klipsch has authorized resellers in Taiwan so you might get counterfeit or gray market ones if you did manage to find them. Logitech has some 5.1 speakers that are ok. Do you have a laptop or a desktop? If a desktop, make sure you check whether you have a soundcard that supports multiple channels before you run out to buy 4.1 or 5.1 speakers. The center and rare channel outputs are usually color-coded orange and black, IIRC.

I don’t use speakers atm…I just pair my laptop with a pair of Shure E2C’s.

I have some Logitech’s as well. Had a set for years. It has two speakers with one huge cube sub woofer.
But, if you really don’t want Logitech again, go for Altech Lansing. They’re also great. I have an even older set on my other PC. Similar set up as well, 2 speakers and 1 sub.

I found a pair of surprisingly good quality yet cheap-cheap speakers recently. Brand is J-S, a no-name brand. Got it at Nova. Under NT$2000.

I second Klipsch but I’m pretty sure you can’t get them in Taiwan. I spent some time looking and finally asked a family member to bring them from the US for me. The ProMedia 2.1 is only around US$150 and I use them for computer, home theater (non-surround), and piano.

But for something that’s actually available locally, I would go for Logitech. Is this model available here? logitech.com/en-us/speakers_ … evices/231 I don’t see it on their Taiwan page.

My Altec Lansing’s are excellent. They were only about 2000NT for two speakers and a sub-woofer. They have a cable-attached volume control with headphone jack and auxillary jack so that you can plug in an MP3 player.

I got some Altec Lansings for 1,000 at Geant. But if you get the music through one of those little computer jacks, it’s not going to be high fidelity anyway. Probably need to get a good sound card with some decent outputs on the back.

If you want something better you need to get something that professional musicians use, and will be well over the top. The quality of the speakers is much more important than the size of the jack. It’s more than good enough for desktop size speakers anyway.

There was another thread on this awhile back singing praise for these boxes Have purchased two sets now, and can say for what they are they sound really nice. But, get the J-S 2203AA only. The rest sound like crap.

Thanks everyone for the replies. We went to 3C and tested out a few and, contrary to my original post, we went with a set under $2,000NT. We were just looking at basic speakers, nothing professional or requiring a new sound card, but something better than the two piddly things we already had. We listened to a set by Altec Lansing, a set by Creative, and a few others, but we ended up with Kinyo. I don’t know how long they’ll last, but they were cheaper and sounded clearer than the others in the same category. You can get them at Carrefour as well, so I’m assuming they’re older or discontinued.
