Warning labels for Threads

Complaint: For example, thread titles like these two: What do you call that thing women like? 101 names and I think maybe I like Jolin

Problem: One :It’s in that gray (dark IMO) of sexual/sexist humor that was discussed to death in this thread: Who does Forumosa target:

Two: The title is misleading,IMO. I pmed Loretta about a possible change in the title to indicate that it may not be suitable for all audiences. He made no response or is thinking it over. Or engrossed in a websearch to find his complete list. :idunno:

But the point is, it’s a catchy title, that’s misleading. And that’s where the ‘complaints’ about f.com being sexist come in. With a title like that you can’t say to someone “well if you don’t like it don’t read it.” Heck you have to read half the post to get what the subject is. And by then, you’ve been exposed.

Three: Not all women like that ‘thing’ you’re trying to find nifty names for. And some men do. So now, we have discrimination in action on the website. :ponder:

Solution: Like threads that have content that’s NSFW, lets come up with an acronym for sexual content. Like MA-mature audience SC- sexual content BAP-Boys at play, etc. You get the drift.

Ms. Tipper Gore aka Namahottie

Mature Audience! Heh.

With an interest in the historical development of English (the main thrust of my degree, as it were), I find the topic interesting.

See what I mean? This whole concept of agreeing what’s acceptable is just untenable wherever a diverse group of adults is gathered together.

After all that serious stuff I thought a bit of levity was in order. Harmless fun, offensive to no-one. Even my grandmother can say “willy” in polite conversation. Even bobepine posted in the thread without complaining.

But not everyone agrees. I think she has a point, there may be others, but some people will think she’s being silly. There may even be a few people rolling their eyes and wondering if it’s a full moon tonight. We all have different ideas about what’s a fair comment.

I can see that some people may not want to see the thread. After getting Nama’s PM I actually changed the title from ‘that thing’ to ‘that thing women like’ to try and drop the hint more forcefully, but apparently I should have been more explicit. Maybe I should have said “looking for names for genitalia” or something. But presumably that would have meant nobody could look at the forum without the possibility of being upset.

I’ll let the bosses rule on the title. I obviously know nothing.

Nama, I owe you an apology. I can see where you’re coming from. You’ve made your point very clearly and succinctly. No further argument from me.

Thanks loretta,

I was trying to be humorous yet serious. I don’t care if people want to talk about genitalia all day long. I love to talk about farts. Go figure. :idunno:

But you get my point. I just want to offer something constructive to think about rather than come into the fuss forum and whine “lorettttta, is talking about his weenie” :raspberry: boo-hoo.

I want diversity, but I also want people to be warned also.

Then there’d have to be warnings about the warnings.

GM, no there wouldn’t.

But I’m waiting for the omnipotent GooseEgg or Maoman to weigh in on this…As I am trying to fullfil their earlier request of submitting suggetions on way to improve the site.

I hope they have much much MUCH better things to do.

Actually, we have a warning when you register - something to the effect that this site is not intended for anyone under the age of 13, and that parental permission is required for anyone who is under 13.

NSFW tags for images are necessary, because images are more explicit than words, and because many workplaces have strict anti-porn rules, and what one person might feel is harmless nudity, another might feel is pornography.

I think that if you’re offended, you took the right course of action, Namahottie. Contact the original poster and let him/her know your point of view. Chances are, if your request is reasonable, and if your tone is polite, they’ll comply. If things still don’t go the way you’d like, you can hit the “squeal” button or PM/e-mail me. I probably wouldn’t act on a thread posted in Fun & Games that is looking for penis euphimisms - I don’t think the Forumosa community would really find that actionable. It’s silly, and Fun & Games is the right place for it.

There was no warning that this thread mentioned farts. Can all such threads please have a warning about bottom burps, windy millers and air biscuits ? I don’t like having other people’s bum trumpets forced upon me. Thank you

too much time?

Would warning tags be an improvement? Or would it add an unnecessary hindrance to the mods by having them continuously police content to stamp anything questionable?

Airbiscuits included.

I think the OP’s original suggestion is valid, but I think that Forumosa is great the way it is.

For proof, go check out all the other sites in Taiwan and take a gander at their “forum” links. They’re all lame. Every single one of them.

“other sites in Taiwan”…in e nglish?

Didn’t know there were any ‘other sites’ in e nglish.

Now, really!
I should have been given fair warning about such hilarity! Now, it’s quite obvious that BFM is oft prone to especially hilarious comments. Yet, the point remains that how was I supposed to know that this post was going to be especially hilarious for me, right here, right now, right then! : in this very space I just occupied in the space time universal bowel obstruction?

It’s no mean feat to inhale stout whilst reading a hilarious post. A reader could suffer a stroke, or even worse spray stout all over his monitor as a result of such lack of fair warning.

Shocking!
It’s the Thin Edge Of The Wedge, i Say!

Yours truly,
NSFW tags for images are necessary, because images are more explicit than words, and because many workplaces have strict anti-porn rules, and what one person might feel is harmless nudity, another might feel is pornography.
Sure, but that can go for literary works also.

It’s like almost like being at HH and going up to you and saying bob is over at that table talking about women’s butts. Can you go over and say something? :unamused:
Pms are great for getting the message across. And if the poster doesn’t respond so is feedback forum.

I’m not offended, just pointed out that other’s (i.e. newbies, women who are lurkers/new, gay men not considered, etc) may have been offended and that’s why I purposed a warning label. Even in the Fun& Games thread should have them. Even if it’s the right place and silly and fun. What’s so hard about putting a FMAO (for mature audiences only) in one’s title? It says you’re are mindful others. Not censoring yourself, but actually weeding out the temptation for complaints.

Again for the record, I don’t always care about what people like to talk about, but let’s remember not to get into a huff or use “if you don’t like then don’t read it” when people start to complain about things that they consider offensive, when initally they didn’t realize it was going to be.

Encourging posters to be a “self-moderator” would be a good step in assisting the mods in their work.’

Peace!

I agree. The problem is not offensive or suggestive writing. It’s hilarious avatars and posts that leave me in tears laughing that gets people staring at me. Anything funny should come with a strict warning, especially if you’ve got a laugh like mine.

For example, BFM’s post resulted in getting a nasty look from the Chinese teacher for breaking the silence…pun unintended… in her strict anchingban room by laughing uncontrollably for a good minute. Bum trumpets, indeed.
