in taichung i know a place at a flower market. but i suppose you’re in taipei

If you are in Taipei then the supermarket in The Mall - Far Eastern Hotel on Tun Hua usuall has rosemary, thyme, mint, parsley, basil, and a few more.

Taipei: flower market under the Jiangguo bridge.

City Super in the Far Eastern Mall (see above) also has fresh coriander.

Hi all,

I love it to cook, but where can I find the right herbes and spices? Basil? Mint? Thyme? Savory? and and and? Are they cooking here with nothing? I mean, it seems to be a country without fresh herbes?!?!?!

Please help me guys!!!

I have a smal place here in shan chong I go to where if inf must things I look for, it’s some kind off bakery supply store I think.
I don’t know the adres, but I will try to find next time.

Welcome have some to.

I’m currently trying to get my herb garden growing.
Mint is doing well and some hot chilies are showing promise.
I hope to add 6 or 8 more to it.

My promise of habenero seeds turned out to be an envelope with a bunch of habenero powder and pieces…but damn its hot stuff!. He trying to get some more seeds to send me.
If I get more, they grow and do well I’ll share the seeds or starter plants. When it happens.

Hi papabear,

maybe you can pick up some fresh herb plants at the flower market.

Costco has many herbs and spices in the large size containers. Just about everything I need I can find here and more.

Fresh herbs in pots are available for about $100 NT per large pot at the flower market. I’ve seen thyme, rosemary, mint and basil.

Where are you? Taipei?

Breeze Center, Jason’s, City Super and that Indian grocery store on Zhongxiao E. Rd. Sec. 5 (across from the City Hall MRT station, 2nd floor) will have herbs and spices.

For really fresh (i.e. still growing), follow the advice of the above posters, such as the Flower Market, where you can buy growing herbs as well as seeds.

Thanks for advice with the flower market (and all the others). I went to a little flower store in Jhongli and puff between the nice flowers I saw the growing herbs. Now I have my own plant

Hmmmm, I think today will be a kitchen day and I am thinking about a roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic. Häahäa.

Perhaps I haven’t been looking in the right places, but I’ve been to various supermarkets as well as Carrefour and I haven’t been able to find spices like nutmeg, allspice, paprika, etc. Does anyone know where I can get these spices? I’m also looking for vanilla extract…I bought some vanilla powder but I don’t know how to use it. I tried looking online but every brand seems to have a different ratio.

I have been getting most of my spices at City Super. It’s the big grocery store on B2 (B3?) level of the new SOGO at Zhongxiao and Fuxing. Jasons at FE21 in Banciao also has a pretty good selection. I didn’t check for vanilla extract because I know I can get it at any DIY baking store but they probably have it also. For the baking stores do a quick search. There are several that are listed with directions for each.

Hi thisisxnecessary, and welcome to Forumosa!

First, if you add your location to your profile, people can more easily direct you to a source near you.

As mentioned above, the big, upscale supers tend to have them. Check out the basements in Taipei 101 tower (Jason’s), Breeze, and so on. Wellman’s import grocery in Tianmu carries them too, including cream of tartar (which is hard to find here). Trinity has Indian spices, and the Filipino grocers on Zhongshan N. Rd. have annatto powder (achiote). You can do a search to find each of the threads on those, including their addresses. Set the search function to ‘food forum’ (not ‘where can I find’). We do already have threads on most basic items like spices, sour cream, and so on, so have a look. I’ll merge this with the existing thread.

Awesome, thanks guys!

Allspice is something I’ve never found for sale here, I got some in Hong Kong though, both whole and ground.
Carrefour tends to stock paprika, but it’s not a particularly good kind and they also have nutmeg, but you might have to go to two or three different ones to find it.
I’ve even found that some Wellcomes are better stocked than others.
Costco sells huge bottles of vanilla extract, but for smaller ones, check out the super market in the bottom of Mitsukoshi 11 I think it is, near the 101, they used to stock a fairly affordable brand.
The vanilla powder is some Japanese synthetic crap, it tends to clump up and you really need to mix it with sugar or flour or something before you mix it with liquid, but it just doesn’t taste right imho.
And of course, all the higher-end super markets such as CitySuper, Jasons and what not tends to stock more exotic things.

I think I got mine at Wellman’s. I’ve never ever seen it anywhere else.

any chance of getting whole nutmeg? and a microplane grater? =D
