I want to take guitar lessons (with a real teacher) both for personal reasons and I like to have a musical instrument with my young students besides just a tape and there’s no way to teach English with a clarinet or a trumpet in your mouth and my school has no piano. As a side note (get it? side note? nevermind.) where can I get a good, but cheap guitar?
Assuming you’re in Taipei, this probably dosen’t help too much , but when I lived in Chishan (mnts east of Tainan/Kaohsiung) I knew a awesome guitar teacher. He ran a music store and had lots off cool equipment and stuff. We’d go over there and jam once and awhile…it was great. So, I don’t know of a specific teacher in your city but if a podunk town like chishan has a guitar teacher…your city more than likely does also . If you can’t find anything, start checking music shops…
In Taipei, try Apa Studio (on 2nd floor, Hoping (Heping) East Road, midway between Jiankuo and Fuhsing) - ask for ‘Changmao’. Or else Player - the shop for guitars and the studio next door for teachers - on the corner of HoPing (Heping) East and Jinshan South.
I am looking for a guitar teacher. I have a brand new acoustic guitar. I have one year of experience and practice. I’m looking for someone who wants to teach me one hour a week, preferably on a weekend day. Please send a private message if you are available.
Thanks,
T.
I know a guy that can teach you. He’s a master in guitar and a songwriter. His name is Romy, a filipino guy I met at holy family church.
He mention about getting some students last time. Gimme your contact phone. I’ll get Romy to call you. The guy speak English, Tagalog and Chinese. He plays at the Holy family choir every sunday mass.

Is it possible for a kid (11yo nearly 12) to get the basics of guitar in 6-8 weeks, with 2 or 3 lessons per week?
And what can I expect to pay for guitar lessons?
Thanks!
A good place to buy a first guitar is under the bridge in the computer market on Bade Rd. Downstairs just on the left. Very decent guitars for NT$2,000-NT$3,000. For better guitars, I like the shop on the east side of Jinshan between Renai and Chungxiao.
Apa has a new location in ximending as well.
Guitar lessons tend to cost NT$400-$700/hour
It is very difficult to find a good guitar teacher in Taiwan (or anywhere). You will need to look around a lot and be willing to change teachers.
BH: What are the basics of guitar? Depends on what the kid wants to play really. If he wants to play campfire songs, he can do that from a book. I think it will probably take years of lessons to get much out of it. The guitar is an extremely complicated instrument. You won’t learn much in 6-8 weeks.
Thanks Chainsmoker,
He’s already got a guitar and has had it a few years, we just didn’t have anyone to give him lessons (or had trouble nailing down someone with time). It’s an adult beginner’s guitar, somewhere around $4000, recommended by the salesperson.
I’ve bought him a beginner’s book for kids but I don’t think he’s a book learner like I am. I think it would really help him to have someone show him. Just offering him something as a creative outlet… if I could find art classes in English here, which I know he really enjoys, I’d go with that instead. Not particularly artsy myself so I don’t think we do enough to inspire him.
Thanks!
Over the course of the year in which I took guitar lessons, I learned about a dozen songs. I can still play a few notes of “Take it Easy” by the Eagles. Guitar is damned hard to learn!
Sure, Tomas, but he’s eleven and you’re umm… older. I used to think I’d missed that “window” of ten and under but I have a friend who only learned to play the drums as a teenager, about sixteen or so, and became quite good. I know of a girl band back home. All the members only started learning/playing instruments as teenagers.
Of course, there’s no pressure for him to excel at the guitar… I’m just hoping it will help him deal with adolescence. He read a lot last summer, I thought art or music would be more fun this summer.
Another benefit for your son–a teenager who can wail on the guitar undoubtedly gains at least 20 cool points with his peers.
Part of my problem with guitar is that my hands are bigger than most people’s. It makes them a bit less nimble on the frets.
Good luck to your son.
Hey, for these studio lessons is it possible for lessons in English?
Hi!
Does any one offer guitar lessons, or know where I can take some? The lessons will have to be in English. I just bought a guitar from Costco and I intend learning to play it. I am a beginner, so any teacher must be prepared for a long haul.
Do you want to learn the guitar so you can join this Bond:
Well that would be a bonus, wouldn’t it?
does anyone know where i can get guitar lessons (beginner) with an English speaking tutor?
almost every guitar/music store on the island has 1 on 1 tuition from beginner to advanced, here in Taichung standard tuition price is about NT500 per month, but i don’t know how many hours that is… in my experience guitar store guys have better english skills than most, but ask around at a few stores until you find someone who’s go the linguistics to teach you in english…
or else you could laugh off the tuition idea and check out www.cyberfret.com it’s got really good introduction for beginners and basics with excercises, scales, theory, chords and stuff … getting tuition really isn’t necessary until you’ve got the basics down, and even then there’s no need if you’re motivated to improve…
plasma…thanks for the info. I will give that site a go…must buy a guitar first!.
I’m not a complete beginner…well, i know about 10 chords, although not necessarily what they are called.
Looking for a guitar teacher.
I would like to take guitar lessons 1-2 times/week but can’t afford more than NT$600 per hour/lesson.
I know all the basic chords, I’m looking to learn rock and jazz soloing and improvisation.
I’d prefer a teacher who speaks at least some English, best if fluent.
Evenings and weekends are best.
Does anyone know a good teacher? I’m in Taipei.
Thx
