I’d like to buy a full-size (22") Weber charcoal grill in Taiwan. Amazon has it but wants $250 shipping plus $60 customs fees in addition to $150 for the grill: link to grill on Amazon
Does anyone know where I might be able to purchase one like this in Taiwan?
Full Moon Festival got me in the mood for more rooftop barbecuing, and a grill with a lid adds a lot of options. Didn’t see one at RT Mart, Costco or Carrefour.
I saw some at the old B&Q; maybe not “Weber” brand but seems okay. I think this is their website: i-house.com.tw/product/menu/id/1519 $699 for something similar
I bought one of those from B&Q just last weekend. It’s not a real Weber and it’s not quite as big (or sturdy), but it’s good enough, will do the job just fine and was plenty cheap. Certainly a lot cheaper than getting one by mail.
Costco carries a few of the Weber products, however this time of year they may not. They usually have the small one, a mid-sized one and the smoker. Also you can find Kingsford charcoal there.
Last time I was there was in the beginning of August and they still had them in stock (be it only a few). So might luck out and find one there, but thinking they have all their ‘winter’ stuff out by now.
So make do with what you can find and next summer get to Costco would be my advice if you are hell bent on a Weber (which I can totally understand).
I have one of the little bad boys, and it has lasted about three years and is still in great shape, far cry from the crap they sell normally here.
Mother Theresa - good to know! I took a look at a local B&Q but they only had the very small grills. As long as the coals don’t burn through the bottom or something I’d be willing to give them a whirl.
tcarnagan - thanks for the tips! I saw a Smokey Joe size grill at Costco (might have been Kingsford brand) but didn’t bite since I thought I could find a larger size. I’ll have to watch for their restock next year.
For Full Moon Festival we used my father-in-law’s grill, which appeared to be made of thick cast iron. It did the trick, but had a few drawbacks:
It didn’t have very good ventilation. With so little air coming up from the bottom it was hard to get the coals started. I found myself blowing in air from the top, which isn’t the best way to go about it. Might look at a coal chimney next time.
It had very low ground clearance. The concrete rooftop didn’t mind, but grilling while sitting on a miniature chairs was a strange experience. I’m looking for a grill I can stand next to.
Its grill sat just over the coals. It’s a great setup for kebabs or other fast-cooking food, but it was a challenge to cook thicker cuts of meat without overcooking them outside or undercooking them inside.
It had no lid. If it did I could cook thicker cuts (e.g., steaks!) by piling the coals on one side, putting the meat on the other side, and putting on the lid. That’s really where the Webers shine - you can in effect bake the food you’re grilling if you like.
On the other hand, if the Communists ever invade, I think the grill we used could withstand a direct artillery hit. Or we could use it to smelt steel or somesuch.
Sorry to sound so picky - grilling Weber-style is just one of the few things I’m really good at, and I’d love to share that with my in-laws. It would be my way of bringing a small bit of Wisconsin to Kaohsiung for them.
Has anyone seen a “smoker” for sale? I finally found me some good old cheery tree wood which makes great tasting pork smoked. If you know meat, their is nothing better than smoked meat for its flavor and tenderness. Nothing like buying pork ribs, smoke them, and then shake the meat off the bone. Now I am hungry.
I found the Cherry wood within 50 yards of my house. The government has bought this old Chinese grave yard and is moving it to make a park. It had 100’s of old cherry trees so I just went out and cut down a few of the trees before the bulldozer nailed them.
michaelcrace -
Man that sounds like a good deal. Good smoke wood is hard to find here.
I sometimes think it might be worth it to bring in a container of mesquite from Texas.
Raise the level of food flavor awareness a notch or two here.
