Webhosting by miltownkid - Limited time only!

Hello Forumosans,

Some of you may know me from my years of posting, and some might be reading this as my first post. Either way, if you’ve been thinking about starting a website or have one already, you might be interested in this message.

I’m offering high quality hosting, at a greatly reduced price to you, so I can learn more about the web hosting business. Basically, I’m looking for more people to test the service while getting great hosting!

Instead of listing all the features and capabilities of the service feel free to post or PM/email questions.

This offer is only available to people I’ve already met in person, or people willing to be met (in person, via Skype, by phone, etc.).

Also, I’m willing to donate space to people who have the need.

For the record I’ve been “testing” things since December last year. I’m hosting sites for a few Forumosans already, maybe they’ll have something good (or bad :frowning:) to say.

MK, will you be at the Happy Hour tonight? Maoman.org needs a new home…

It might be a little late to tell you this but… no . Hope everyone had a good time.

For the idiots about you MTK, what does webhosting involve?

Assume I know nothing.

I bought a site from MK, check out www.spellhound.com

If you looked at building a website like building a house, webspace (in it’s most basic form) would be the dirt that the house is built on. When you buy webspace you’re buying digital land to house your website.

Hosting now though comes with a lot more tools to help build that house. For instance, let’s say you wanted a web forum on your website. It the past that might mean you’d have design and install it yourself (or hire someone to do it for you). Now many hosts (mine included of course) come with tools that, with a few clicks of the mouse, you’d have a full working web forum (like Forumosa.com).

So basically, finding hosting is only one part of having a website. The website would still have to be made (which is something I can do, help you do, or find someone else to do it for you).

My site/blog is hosted by Miltownhosting. I like it, good support and once a month he comes by and washes my floor.

The floor washing was a part of a special I had running last month.

So who owns the dirt? How was it allocated to the original “owners”? And how was a market price decided upon?

Well, I’m leasing the dirt, from a guy who’s leases the dirt, from a guy who owns the dirt (and you’d be leasing it from me). I’m sure the bandwidth chain gets even funnier . Well, the original owners own the real land and digital land that your site would be sitting on.

The current market price seems to be “as much as you can get” at the moment. There’s everything from free to ultra expensive (and everything in between). If it were possible to draw a line down the center from free to expensive, my current rate would easily rest on the side on free (the distince between where I would lie and the middle/zero is debatable). To my knowledge there there are 0 hosts that pay you to host with them (though I’m sure someone’s tried to form a business model around that).

What are the costs (initial and monthly) involved of registering a domain and hosting a site with this offer, and how does this compare with other Taiwanese companies?

teggs

I’ve only seen one other Taiwanese company and it’s much cheaper than them (because my server isn’t in Tawan). There really isn’t any reason to choose a Taiwanese company over one outside of Taiwan (unless you have a good reason to ).

I register (most of) my domains at www.namecheap.com and those are $8.88 for .com .org and .net. I’ve heard some other places are a little cheaper though.

I’m charging 2,000NT/year as a starting point, but it’s negotiable. If a person has a service to trade or wants more than just hosting (like help with a website), it can go up and down.

I pay US$65 annually, about the same as MK charges, for internet dirt that I never use. Apparently I get all sorts of amazing features and greeeaat customer service and technical support.

But when I need help with something I ask MK. I should have hosted with him really, and I know people that do and are very happy. I’ve never heard a complaint against him, except that he can’t hold his beer.

Anyone wanting to prove or disprove this theory is welcome to purchase beer for me to hold or not hold.

I’m in ChungHe. Show me some local (read cheap) places for brewskis here in YongHe . chungHe and I’ll throw some back wit ya.

Last time me and The Kid knocked down some brewski’s was buying at the Family mart and chugging it at my office.

There’s a pub right off of Jhonghe Road toward Yonghe and the night market. It’s behind the seafood restaurant. Can’t see it if you’re coming from YongAn Market MRT though. Not sure if it’s cheap.

We talked about hosting and other technical hosting and application stuff that night. So I’m still on topic
