Wed, Apr 15 at Revolver: SYLVAINE, My Dark Secret Transcendence, Alpaca Treatment

Sylvaine is the solo project of Norwegian musician Kathrine Shepard, originating in Oslo in 2013. Her music serves as a bridge between worlds, oscillating constantly between tenderness and cruelty, light and shadow, serenity and chaos. It stares directly into the fragility of human existence while pointing toward a spiritual core that transcends reality. Beneath those seemingly tranquil melodies, there is always a surging tide of intense and raw emotional tension—as if inner solitude, longing, and introspection have been unreservedly distilled into sound.

Her work is often described as a musical fable imbued with the essence of Norwegian forests: reminiscent of whispers from ancient folklore echoing through misty forest clearings. Sylvaine’s sound is not merely “beautiful”; it is an atmospheric construction with a magnetic pull. Listeners often find themselves unknowingly untethered from daily time, drawn into a space that is simultaneously intimate and alien. This musical language—interweaving spirituality, natural imagery, and internal emotion—lies at the very heart of her charm.

To date, Sylvaine has released four albums and a split EP, with a footprint spanning stages across Europe, North America, and South America. Two of her works were nominated for the Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian Grammy) in the Metal category. With the 2018 release Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone, Kathrine became the first female artist in the award’s history to be nominated for Best Metal Album. She is not only a creator but also a versatile multi-instrumentalist proficient in guitar, bass, piano, and synthesizers. Her background in classical vocal training and musicology has allowed her to establish an exceptionally nuanced and profound personal vocabulary between extreme metal and ambient music.

For many listeners, the connection between Sylvaine and Alcest is pivotal. Having toured with Alcest as early as 2014, she developed a deep and enduring collaborative relationship with Neige. Not only did Neige personally provide drums for Sylvaine’s Wistful and Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone, but Sylvaine also contributed vocals to the track “L’île des morts” on Alcest’s 2019 album Spiritual Instinct. This partnership is no mere ornament; it is built upon a long-term mutual trust and a high level of aesthetic and spiritual resonance. If you are drawn to the balance of introspection, spirituality, and dark beauty displayed by Alcest during the Kodama and Spiritual Instinct eras, then it is almost impossible for Sylvaine’s music not to resonate with you; both belong to the same emotional and aesthetic continuum.

With her new EP, Eg Er Framand, scheduled for release on March 22nd, Sylvaine turns her gaze deeper into Norwegian tradition and cultural roots. Through a more introspective and quiet approach, she summons myths, folktales, and the memory of the land. This is not merely a stylistic shift, but a return to the source—a face-to-face encounter with the fundamental question of why she creates.
If you love Alcest, you have absolutely no reason to miss Sylvaine. Within the realm of Blackgaze, her work is every bit as sincere and deeply moving.
