Is it my imagination or do most married Taiwanese not wear wedding rings or wedding bands?
Or are just about everyone on the MRT single?
When I ride the MRT, I occasionally see women wear rings on their pinky, but I’ve yet to see many wedding rings. In the US, it seems that most everyone are wearing some kind of ring.
People don’t wear wedding rings here. They don’t seem to know what they mean, either.
I met a Taiwanese guy on the beach in Byron Bay (Aus) - he asked me why I was in Taiwan and I just held up my hand with the wedding ring and said ‘I’m married’. Later on in the conversation he said to me ‘Thanks for teaching me that if I want to pick up an Aussie girl I need to check her left hand first.’
Really, people have no clue. I hold up my hand all the time and people just look at me like ‘whaaa?’ But I’m going to keep doing it, dammit, because it’s a right I get when I wear one.
Apparently most people just buy rings for the ceremony and then put them away, or wear them on a chain around their neck if they’re particularly romantic. And usually they’re gold or silver flowery things; plain wedding bands aren’t popular.
So how can someone figure out if the other person is married or not besides asking?
Rings are confusing because I’ve seen many single looking people wear rings… it’s possible she’s just wearing a ring because it’s her stylistic choice.
