I’ve actually seen these dogs for sale here in Taiwan at the Shi-Lin Nightmarket (of course) Poor things locked up in little cages all night and when the “breeder” shhows you the book of all the dogs he’s got at home they’re still in crates. poor things
After wandering about the internet, I’ve discovered a site which claims to sell Weimaraners, male for 30000-35000, female for 35000-40000.
So the option is there to purchase a weimaraner puppy. However, it seems that the constant high energy level of these dogs may not be suitable for your lifestyle.
If you’re just going to jog/run, I think most medium/large breeds are able to keep up with humans, unless the specific dog is out of shape.
I still reccomend the tugo as the best breed to have in Taiwan, as they have no problem with the climate here and are adaptable to many conditions while rarely getting sick.
By tugo, I don’t mean mutt. I’m referring to the native Taiwanese dog.
Though they are superb athletes, they are still perfectly happy to just sit beside your feet for as long as you wish.

lupillus, did I meet you at the last Taoyuan happy hour? I think your name sounds familiar. Thanks for checking on the internet for some Weimaraner breeders in Taiwan. I tried that, but was not able to find anything. If you have the link, I would love to take a look at it. I already figured that a healthy dog from a decent breeder would be that expensive, but it is an investment made for the next 10-12 years.
As it turns out, I might not get the dog here in Taiwan. Probably most important reason are the not trustworthy breeders here. Second, having such a dog in Taiwan living in an appartment is probably a bad idea, I agree with that (plus lack of close by parks, or forest etc makes it even more difficult).
As for getting a tugo, I am actually not planning to stay in Taiwan forever, maybe another 2 years maximum, and then I am not sure where I will be heading. So the tugo might not feel comfortable there. So that would be another good point, I will have to figure out where I will be more permanent, then I can get a dog.
About the excersise question, I actually hate running/jogging. I love riding my moutain bike, so I am often in the woods, do long distance tours, (30 km off road is a long distance, at least for me, and probably enough for the Weim). Although I am probably not doing this every day, but short trips in the evening would probably work as well. Depending on where I am going to stay, I was always interested in this sport that is a mix between cross-country skiing and dog sleding. I am not sure how well a Weim can take the cold though.
So bottom line, I am probably still interested in getting a Weim, but not withing the next 2 years. That should give me enough time to do more research, and hopefully meet a couple of these fantastic dogs.
Thanks for all your input guys. And if anybody knows any Weim that I can meet on this island, please let me know.
Thanks for the input, I will have to check out Shilin one of these days. Although, as Maoman pointed out, and your experiences seem to be similar, the breeders here probably don’t have the dog I am looking for. And I don’t think I want to support this cruelty by buying a puppy from one of them.
This is what one of the breeders has on his website. It’s of a couple of puppies crawling about…but…they look like they can barely walk.
I don’t understand how this would make you want to buy them.

This guy is selling them for 12000 nt. If you want to see his puppies or the bitch, I could try calling him. But she is quite sorry-looking in the pictures.
If you are staying long term in Taiwan, perhaps you could contact a reputable breeder in another country and import a puppy. Preferably from a country Taiwan recognizes as rabies-free(Japan, England, Sweden, Iceland, Australia, or New Zealand), so your puppy would not have to spend time in quarantine.
I was sitting at the end of the table nearest to the door at the Taoyuan HH, and yes, I think we met.

Thanks for the links, but as I wrote above, I won’t support animal cruelty by buying dogs from not trustworhty breeders. That is why I was looking for someone who knows what he is doing.
Also, in my previous post, I don’t think I will be staying here for a longer time, maybe another 2 years. So I can probably wait and rather not buy a puppy from one of the breeders here, or a pet store, or even worth, the night market. And who knows, I might move to one of the countries you mention above.

Yeah, I saw a picture of you on the flickr side, it was nice meeting you there. Hope to see you at one of the other events.
