Yup, now I remember why I walk everywhere. Eight or nine months of the year I mostly enjoy it, and the Danshui distances aren’t bad. Summer months, nope, I’m not going that far.
I suppose I could try to use that scooter I’ve got and haven’t actually started in almost two years. I keep meaning to get rid of that.
YouBike’s not bad for getting to places (as long as you’re not trying to climb up to the … plateau? Do we have a plateau here?), but not so good for carrying purchases - and I’m guessing YouBike is especially poor for things like pies, which should presumably be kept flat.
The restaurant’s gonna fail. No foot traffic. It’s purely residential, despite the land nearby being zoned for commercial. There are no offices, no jobs, nothing to attract people.
Half of their products being available for order only could also be a problem for the two walk-ins a day (well, three on weekends).
I am sometimes surprised by places in the middle of nowhere that somehow survive via word-of-mouth, deliveries, and orders. So there’s that route for them. I sure hope they’re not paying much for rent.
Judging by the photos, I don’t think they are a restaurant - looks like take-out only.
Car centric neighborhood design. And it would be easy to attract people because Tamsui barely has any parks, a good park there will attract people, but the only one is crap
Just hard to find some western food like pie especially in tamsui. I agree that don’t look amazing but I think they look ok. Maybe they taste better than they look?
Oh, if they were on a street I regularly walked, I’d probably give it a try this weekend. But as it is I’ll probably wait until September.
I suppose I could ask my wife about ordering. She gets food delivered all the time. Too new-fangled for me.
EDIT: Mom’s Pies used to have a regular stop in Danshui (a couple of hours on Tuesday afternoon, if I recall correctly), but that ended a few years ago. They’re often selling beside different MRT stations and if you miss pies they’re definitely worth a try; you can see their schedule here (Chinese).
Surely not the absolute best restaurant in Tamsui, but the title of the thread is quite restrictive, so anyways:
I was always curious about this little place because reviews are good, but it is too close to my place and I was always finding excuses to not give it a try: I just started riding; I am finishing riding; it isn’t the cleanest/coziest place in the world; etc.
Today I decided to enter. I ate a bacon sandwich with milk tea. Sandwich comfortably above average (Taiwanese average is very low for sandwiches) with decent taste bacon, egg, slice of tomato, some lettuce but not overwhelming… Milk tea a bit too sweet but served in an actual mug. Best of all: only 50NT.
Looks like a family run place. Old couple and their son?/daughter in law? It is like a visit to an older Taiwan, both in looks, atmosphere, and prices.
I will probably repeat when I have time for breakfast at the end of my ride.
On my phone and having issues sharing this place. It is very close to Marco Cubano, Bo’ai street. Burger place run by foreigners. It looks tasty but I didn’t have the half an hour wait tonight, so I don’t really know how it is.
I wondered what that was! The other day I walked by a small poster with that name in that area, and a semi-shuttered door. But the sign said “Since 2022”, which really confused me, and the lack of English on the poster didn’t reassure me as to quality.
But no, haven’t tried it. Burgers are fairly low on my list of desired meals anyway.
Yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed the nigiri / sushi at this small stall in Danshui. Two small tables for dine-in, but I think most of their business is take-out.
This is probably the kind of place that’s everywhere and my eyes just glaze past the Chinese.
Yeah, fair point. This was mid-day so it wasn’t THAT bad, but there was still a close call worth a “You won’t BELIEVE what happened today!” anecdote in Canada, but here is just, well, going outside.
