Hi, guys!
I’m 4th year study student going to Taiwan for medical exchange.
I’m trying to make a decision on what city I want to stay in for 4 weeks during the exchange. I will be working at a university-affiliated hospital.
There is a list of universities:
Kaohsiung Medical university
China medical university in Taichung
Chung Shan Medical University in Taichung
National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taipei
Fu Jen University in New Taipei
Please, tell me which one is better to study and have a good reputation
Thank you for any advice! =)
China Med in Taichung has a good reputation from talking to people I know when living there. I thought the city as a whole was pretty cool. Not sure exactly what the person above has against the place.
National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University is the best among the choices in terms of difficulty to get into (They are all hard to get into), and resources. Their affiliated hospital is the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, which is one of the top hospitals in Taiwan. However, they also have a hospital in Yilan, so you should find out which one they will send you before you go.
If you are not fluent in Chinese, I would suggest you to first check if any courses you want to take will be offered in English (English taught courses are difficult to find for specialized subjects). Also, if you are working in a team, you want to check if your team can communicate in English.
It doesn’t matter which city.or even which medical school, pick by the content and the supervisors .
Also a 1 month exchange with no clear criteria of what is supposed to be achieved seems fairly pointless in my book. I wouldn’t sign off on it.
“Like I said, if the OP has a specialty, why not find the appropriate hospital that way?” I agree with you 100%.
My comment was made with regards to why you said these 2 things about living in Taichung for all of 4 weeks.
“Taichung kind of sucks.”
“Four weeks in Taichung? brrrrrr no thanks.”
Hot…Any city of considerable size in Taiwan that isn’t?
Smoggy…Yes, air quality is pretty bad many days.
Dusty…I never experienced that. Seemed to be steel and concrete everywhere. Parks all had plenty of grass.
Flat…Big cities in Taiwan that aren’t flat? Are Taipei & Kao considered hilly? I lived in a highrise and had a swwet view of the mountains by DaKun. Some nice, easily accessable hikes were had there.
Shitkickers…Didn’t meet any of those types. I guess I know who best to avoid.
My sister-in-law’s kid went to medical school in Kaoshiung. Many of the teacher’s used Taiwanese. He ended up skipping most classes and just watching Youtube video instead. Improved his grades that way.
seems like your are a 4th year medical student who’s has already matched into your specialty. 4 week rotation in Taiwan would be a casual month before starting your PGY1 internship. I would pick programs in Taipei. Yang Ming University would be my suggestion. All 5 choices are good programs.
Another one is National Taiwan University (NTU); everybody Asian mom LOVES gushing about that school ad nauseam if their kid or even their sibling’s kid got accepted.
