What are you watching? (Film edition) [2009-2014]

I fianlly saw the last Hary Potter. I had to see it in 3D coz that was what was left. Complete waste. The first half was drivel especially robbing Gringotts. But the rest was just fine. Hokey Dokey.

Yeah, good. If you grew up with the original movie series it works great as a prequel. I’m hoping they make a rise of the Apes II, or 2.0. Whatever they call it these days.

I saw Fast Five a few months ago.
It was freaking awesome.
Freaking awesome.

Of course, completely defying any and all laws of physics, but whatevs. Way worth it.

How could you stomach all the propaganda?
I felt like I was being sandblasted by “Profit! Dont care about lives! We only care about money! Fuck the innocents! (Hate the evil pharmaceutical companies and business men!!!)”
Saw Hanna and
Shelter last weekend.

I preferred Hanna but mrs cfi preferred Shelter.
Finally saw Hanna

After the over-the-top jelly custard breasts of Laura Croft and the tight latex buttocks of V for Vendetta while both jumping off/and jumping to rooftops, finally a movie that doesn’t exploit cliches as much as MTV.

As far as I can recall the best action movie with a female protagonist that I have seen. No super powers, just intellect, instinct, and training.

It is far from perfect because of having mayonnaise-coated-mid-section-writing albeit the pieces are less than two minutes long. But guided by a “Borne” template the beginning and somewhat the end are something new. Multiple international locations and languages while continuing the sense of “where am I” add.

Cons: It is a certainty that this concept will be stolen and made into a TV series and lessened.

Pros: It is a certainty that this concept will be stolen and made into a major TV series by HBO. The absolutely beautiful isolationist/minimalist cinematography in some sections and the frenetic claustrophobic cinematography in other sections handled by professionals would be awesome/stunning in the true sense of the word.

NOTE: Don’t believe the hype/emphasis of the trailers that were edited by those holly golly wood goods that you will find on utube. The trailers are nothing like the actual film. The movie is far better than that trash on wheels.

You are SUCH a feminist!

I really liked The Adjustment Bureau. The ending was all too predictable though.

Recent watches: Troll Hunter - Norwegian Blair Witch Project rip-off only funnier and much better.
King of Kong - Enjoyed this as someone that love 80’s arcade games. The whole underdog situation made it an interesting movie.
13 Assassins - Brutal Japanese action movie that is really engaging
Senna - Doco about Ayrton Senna. I’m not big on motor racing but remembered a lot of the events.

This remake streak is getting out of hand. Footloose is alreay playing in the States, I think, and against all wishes of the audience, they will start shooting Dirty Dancing soon. Austin Powers 4, need I say anything else?

And this is ridiculous:
Moviegoers may want to take two bites of the same apple next year: A pair of live-action adventure flicks based on Snow White will come out in theaters just months apart.

As it stands, a still-unnamed Snow White movie is scheduled for release March 16. That gives moviegoers two-and-a-half months before “Snow White and the Huntsman” on June 1.

Executives are confident that both projects can succeed, given their differences in stars, tone and plot.

The casts of both Snow White films are also distinct enough to merit a return trip to the theater.

In Relativity’s version, billed as a family comedy, Julia Roberts is in for an intriguing role reversal as the former “Pretty Woman” star plays the Evil Queen.

“She’s a very fun and evil and wicked Evil Queen,” said producer Bernie Goldmann, who also produced “300.” Nathan Lane is set to add a humorous touch as a bumbling Huntsman.

In Universal’s epic action adventure, Kristen Stewart of “Twilight” fame gets “Karate Kid”-like fight training from buff Chris Hemsworth of "Thor." Hemsworth plays the mercenary Huntsman, who disobeys orders to kill her. The action-packed movie also involves a love triangle with Prince Charmant, played by Sam Claflin.

“At its heart, it becomes a girl’s empowerment movie,” Roth said.

Timing and casting aside, Snow White is a tale that has been told many times with many different plot twists. These versions follow that tradition.

helped that “Alice in Wonderland” made $1 billion at the box office last year and revived interest in classic stories that feature young girls and have fallen out of copyright protection.

She said pent-up demand for strong female leads has led to the success of a slew of recent bride movies, from “27 Dresses” and “Bride Wars” to the recent “Bridesmaids.”

“Women were lining up for the first week or two because they were desperate for movies about them,” Rosen said. “Maybe [the studios] are hoping that Snow White is kind of like that but better.”

And if there’s two, why not a third? Word has it that Disney has been working on a live-action remake of its animated classic for the past decade. In that one, Snow White ends up in a forest with seven Shaolin monks.

I think the masses are with me on this one.
The movie opened to good reviews and a stronger opening weekend than Fox predicted for it. It has legs too; The movie was still number one in it’s second weekend. It’s holding up well.

What did you think of “A Single Man”? One of her best performances for me. Searches didn’t turn up anything about this film being mentioned here before.?

A vignette about a professor of literature from England teaching at a college in LA while he intends to end his life that day after the death of his lover.

Colin Firth is even better than he was in The King’s Speech.

Tom Ford (yes that Tom Ford) makes a film even better than he makes clothes. For once, a teacher’s pet actually comes through.

oh, I forgot.

Bordering on excellent with just a few chances of tear but hopefully the style and cinematography will wipe that away and produce a smile.

A “hug” movie.

Awwwwwwwwwwsome. add sign-song voice here and a sqeak
Apparently I’m the only one who enjoyed Hugh Jackman on every screen shot. Ohhhhhhhh yes. YES. YES!

Watched Piranha 3-D for the third time. Best movie of the last decade.

I now vote for a FILM thread separated from a MOVIE thread.

Preaching to the choir, mate.

You thought I was kidding. I probably should have named it “How To Become Invisible”.

Exit through the gift shop

A movie by Banksy filmed in documentary style about street art. It may bring back a lot of memories. Ducking, hiding, slinking, and sliding or anything you might have done to make a statement.

Guerrilla! Or maybe it is Duchamp in a gorilla suit.

Thanks as always Bu Lai En. Great and interesting documentary. The quotes from that film would fill a thesis and tenure would be automatically given. And I thought I was strange for only sitting in the first four rows so nobody blocked my view? Thumbs up for film fans.

True Grit (2010)

Coen brothers do it again.

Probably the best “real movie” that has been made in the last .um
years. Excellent screenplay, dialogue, ACTING. Did I say acting? Every actor is believable and incredible (take that you wranglers of English). Not one second in the movie do you escape from the suspension of disbelief. It won’t leave you marveling at a new experience but it is a solid/tight production that hasn’t been fulfilled in a long time.

Of course Jeff Bridges is fantastic and Matt Damon puts in an interesting under-acted and effective performance. Both are great in this one. But Hailee Steinfeld just went to the front of the class and blew the doors off of anyone in her generation and most of the generation before her.

What was a supporting role is now a leading role. (I’m curious to know if that decision was made in pre-production, production, or post production based on her amazing acting ability).

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009)
IMDB
Rotten Tomatoes

I finally got around to watching this and I liked it a whole lot more than Threadkiller and Jaboney. (I mean I liked the film more than Threadkiller and Jaboney liked the movie). It is hard to categorize but probably could be summed up as a thriller for the thinking person. The change in genre is as important or even more important than the changes in the storyline. Genre Morphing.

Not for everyone so Hellywood is making an American version for the masses. :noway: I liked it a lot. Bring on the next two.

The king’s speech: small/tight film with good acting. I don’t think it deserves some of the awards that it has won or will win because of the size/effort required (best director?). But it is a great film.

127 hours: also a good movie and interesting for most of us since we, for the most part, could be considered explorers.

3 idiots: don’t let the first ten minutes put you off this one. Hang in there and there is a payoff that belies the bolly.

Since BuLaiEn is the commander of understatement
This movie is f*n great. I don’t know how I missed it when it came out but this is nearing on perfection. Small, indie, real, location, etc. The framing of the shots, incredible and just how I would compose the scene. This is probably used in film school now on how to shoot a film. Restrict dialogue, angular framing, and natural acting from real people. Plus loved all the nuances. A dwarf working in a scale-train shop.

Watched The Visitor (also by Tom McCarthy). Not as enjoyable as The Station Agent but is very applicable to some with the immigrant woes. Another great film.

The Station Agent goes up towards the top of my favorite films OAT. Both films highly recommended.

Peacock (not the same peacock as this one

David Lynch gets altered and decides to remake psycho. Either that or Hitchcock does John Waters (now there is a scary thought).

Great parts when it goes to the cutaways and the framing turns into very Poagao/elektronisk. They should of had that DP do the whole film. The main DP is stuck in centering everything in the middle of the frame.

Too tangential for most but interesting for some. Ellen Page does ok in this one.

Imagine you are Russian and you are in Barcelona and they are speaking Dutch to you. Someone spiked the koolaid but it wasn’t with acid it was nutmeg.

Recommended for those that like to scratch their heads. I liked it (b- or c+) mostly for the cutaway shots. If you like wonderbread and cheezewhiz don’t bother.

44 inch chest - they didn’t like it but I mostly did. And whatever they say, dialog is not dead despite what various tapper’s of type think.

The stone angel - also underrated. Not a coming of old age but being old and coming to that.

The cutting Edge-The Magic of Movie Editing

Somewhat superficial documentary about film editing but some very interesting background. Aimed more for the non-post-production person but well worth a watch for film fans.

Dogtooth (Kynodontas) (2009)

imdb
rt

I dunno, maybe this quote from RT will say what it means: “It’ll be too disturbing – and meandering – for some, but Dogtooth is as disturbing and startlingly original as modern filmmaking gets.”

It sure is a head-scratcher. Not for the faint of heart but I doubt you have seen something like this before.

To Each His Own Cinema (Chacun son cinéma)

Over thirty short films (3 minutes each) from as many acclaimed directors about attending the cinema. Vignettes about the experience of going to a film (as opposed to films themselves). Some are comedic, dramatic, ironic, sentimental, whimsical, or metaphorical but none are really experimental so the collection can be enjoyed by almost anyone. Of particular note are the Asian entries by Hou Hsiao Hsien, Chen Kaige, Zhang Yimou, and Tsai Ming Liang. Exceptional composition, lighting, and story told effectively with little need for dialogue. Well worth seeking out.

The TV Set (2006)

Amusing cynical (mostly non-verbal) humor. Anyone in design (industrial, graphic, website), engineering, or marketing can probably appreciate it. Pokes at a lot of frustrations many of us have when your “baby” turns into “hello kitty”.

Rubber (2010)

A story about a tire. Yes, a car tire. Definitely a watch for anyone that likes my previous recommendations. Probably the best opening sequence ever.

Good if you are already a fan of Bukowski. For noobs maybe not so much.

Aside: I didn’t know “Black Sparrow Press” started because of him. I loved their books with the handmade quality/feeling of the covers, artwork, and printing.

Crumb (1994)
IMDB
RT
Wiki

Documentary about the underground comix artist Robert Crumb who created “Keep on Truckin’” (yeah, that one) and Fritz the Cat. The film is good but a psych major could write a thesis about this family. wow. Also a must watch for anyone that is a “draw-er or sketch-er”. Unbelievable ability.

In the Realms of the Unreal - The Mystery of Henry Darger (2003/4)

Head-scratching-shaking. I certainly can’t describe it or his life. But you probably read his 15,145-page, single-spaced fantasy manuscript called “The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion”.

derailroaded (2005)

RT

Docu about Wild Man Fischer. More than the guy that sang “My name is Larry” on Dr. Demento that you used to listen to on your AM transistor radio hidden under your pillow when you were supposed to be sleeping.

Aside: He died a little more than a month ago. R.I.P.

After those upbeat documentaries I needed to calm myself so I watched -

Winnebago Man (2009)

Documentary about Jack Rebney. You might not know the name but you probably know him. “The angriest man in the world.” And you think you had a tough day.

Aside: I think he is really sandman’s dad.
