What are you watching? (Film edition) [2009-2014]

As I said, that’s where the cultural element elicits a different reading. High school for me was more Taiwanese-style constant testing/heavy homework workload, baccaulareate exams type preparation, college entrance woes… Fun like that my foot!
Well, my high school life was also NOTHING like that, but there was still a big resonance with me with the vibe of hanging out with friends (for me not my high school days, but later) doing nothing and the nostalgia of the passing of an era.

Ah, dolce far niente, that would be my first year in Taiwan  Passing of an era, too.

Welcome to the movie thread, 2012 edition, where we celebrate/criticize/recommend/discuss the various motion picture presentations (silent or talkie) in the year of the apocalypse! What a fantastic way to spend the final year of our lives.
:roflmao: :discodance: :loco:

Allow me to go first: I second rosarot’s opinion that The Hunger Games was an entertaining flick.
Really, guys, we should be starting a new 2012 thread.

Yeah, I liked that movie a lot. I would describe it as a touching human drama with lot’s of violence and redemption.

 Very well summed up!

Still haven’t seen it, but all the reviews look solid so far. I don’t get much time to go to the movies these days, but maybe I can coax the SO into going to see this one this weekend.

About time! :bravo:

Ahh. Hunger Games.

Haven’t seen that one yet, so I’m not sure if it’s just a watered down version of Battle Royale…

I’ll have to find out sooner or later.

It is, and it is also another take on Romeo and Juliette. :noway:

Saw a bit of it last night. Fell asleep. Can’t imagine I’ll bother watching the rest of it.

I watched a CAM DL. I enjoyed the guy grabbing the cam and hiding it when the movie theater ticket guy came by. :bravo:

Anyone seen John Carter? It flopped bad at the box office but, thinking it might be ok.

Watched Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed it, good twisting plot but fairly obvious.

Going to watch Mirror Mirror at the weekend and will report on that.

I enjoyed John Carter - a fun popcorn flick. The kind of film that Raiders of the Lost Ark was made in tribute of. Nothing great, but certainly a lot more entertaining than many films that do far better.

(Didn’t we have the same Q&A in the 2011 thread?)

If all you see is a love story watching the film, then I think you’re missing the point of it.

The Skin I live in or originally in Spanish La piel que habito.

Awesome. Luv Almodovar. And thank goodness, he’s getting a bit prudish with the sex scenes in his old age -eh, as compared as the ones before, I mean.

Hunger games was DUMB. Like, it had more violin music than Titanic I swear. And the chick cried when someone died…err…isn’t that the point? Way too much time spent on the preparation, way too little time spent on her hiding out, way too much time spent on that guy. She turned into a smooshy idiot, her whole personality changed. Neither of them were likable so I just wanted them dead as soon as possible. sigh.

Nah. Jennifer Lawrence did a solid job with what she was given. Her character cried because a 12 year old girl (whom by the way was her friend) was killed in front of her face and died in her arms. Being a decent, normal human being she reacted with grief and tears. Agreed they could have spend more time on the fighting and the action, but at the end of the day its still a PG-13 film. And you must not be paying attention before voicing your view on the “smooshy” parts, there’s a legit reason why she’s acting that way. Sure there are many flaws in the film and I can name many things I would change to make it better, but frankly the film isnt exactly aiming for a best picture Oscar so I say just enjoy it for what it is. Since you didnt like the film though heres a heads up: theres likely going to be three sequels to this one. You can avoid them next time by, well, not buying a ticket.

P.S. Titanic is a timeless classic. It’s an amazing story brilliantly portrayed. Jack & Rose FTW, LOL.
