I usually give my kids a word search after their tests/quizzes because they love it, it lets them practice and review vocabulary, it keeps them quiet while others are still working, and gives me a moment to grade their work.
They also like the flyswatter game… but I don’t have flyswatters so they just use their hands. For words like “this, that, these, those”, it was great for checking understanding. I would draw four stick figures on the board. One near an apple, one far from an apple, one near four apples, and one far from four apples. I would have two students at the board simultaneously, the rest would be in a queue. I’d say “this” and the first person to touch the stick figure nearby an apple wins and goes again.
They love spelling races. I’ll say a sentence and the first person to correctly write it on the white board wins.
We also play “Go Fish” with their vocabulary words. They go bonkers for this game. I’m able to get everyone to really focus by saying, “If we finish our lesson, we’ll play Go Fish at the end of class.”
