What is a blinker (turn signal) for?

it’s for putting green and blue globes in and for wiring up to the brake and tail lights.

Hahhahaahah shit you had me roaring out of my seat. I have not seen that clip in ages, thanks for the laugh.

Blinkers are for decorative purposes only. Have’t you noticed the flashing blinkers on scooters on the odd occasion that they hit the breaks to stop at an intersection?

Blinkers are to indicate to the person behind on which side he should pass you as you begin your movement. For instance, the guy last night who, upon seeing me hug the center line and turn on my left blinker, promptly began speeding up to pass me on my left just as I was beginning to move that direction. :fume:

LOL So true. I have a theory that turn signaling gets disregarded if one drives
at or near the limit of their driving capabilities.
Driver simply does not have any cognitive resources left to do a signaling.

This translates into lame duck drivers doing 30kph and no signaling (like a lady today
in front of me who managed to drive 30kph all the way while still having near misses with the curb on the turns) and crazy skippers in a hurry on a mission impossible to be quicker than 1000 other cars stuck in the morning traffic.

BTW regarding getting stuck in the lane: try to observe the “body language”.
The first indicator of intention to turn is drifting to the side of road and coasting
(car slows down slightly), then they start braking and just before they are stopped or start turning they turn on the signal.

I get out of the lane at first sight of drifting.

The other skill deficiency I observe: drivers stuck behind turning car because they failed to change lane without reducing speed. Their first reaction is to brake and then try to change lane. You should not change lanes while slowing down - it blocks traffic flow and is more difficult and dangerous (higher speed difference)

That body language thing is so true so i honk when they start drifting but they speed up their process of giving the signal and cut you off anyway or they slow down and wait for you.

How I wish this could be played on TVBS in a news segment about “why the world thinks we suck at driving”!..but at least there’s a chance that someone may see it translated if this episode airs on FX (MOD).

Can anyone find a clip online from Drawn Together with Ling Ling’s driving test? Viacom has taken them all down but I guarantee it’s worth it.

So which we agree, they are for disco effect or for informing where we are going.

I really thought you’d already know this one Stag, those orange flashy lights are to amuse and entertain the driver and take their mind off the chore of driving… You use them to mirror the broken or solid line and other painted road markings as you drive down the street, kind of like that Guitar Hero game… Other people see your flashing lights and it reminds them that they can stop paying attention and distract themselves with good road game too… They have absolutely nothing to do with where or how you’re maneuvering the car… Kind of similar to those multi coloured party lights they put up at all the intersections in that regard…

Ha, none of you have figured it out! The blinkers go off whenever the cell phone rings. That’s a required safety feature on all new cars and motorcycles in Taiwan to warn others that the driver may do unpredictable things while chatting (ie slow down to a crawl, start driving on the wrong side of the road, run through a red light, etc).

Even better - the four-way flashers turn on when the driver is dialing the cell phone or composing a text message, completely taking his/her eyes off the road while sailing through a busy intersection.

Personally, I think that this is a good feature that other countries should emulate.
