What in tarnation is cardless ATM? Is it worth getting or does it make you more vulnerable?
I’ve been noticing the signs at the ATM but I dare not go in and ask due to language problems. even a simple inquiry turns into a big production when the language level is low. So, I ask you.
You just ask the machine for some cash and if it likes you it goes, “yeah, have some cashes”
It’s a ‘smart’ phone banking app that talks to the ATM and dispenses cash money.
Which is weird as there are many businesses accepting NFC payments. But hey, people need cash!
Nice article. it still uses a PIN number to be typed in at the ATM so I guess that’s good.
But according to the signs at my bank, the bank of Taiwan the cardless option is only open to their own accounts so I guess it’s not that useful for the emergency Cash withdrawal say it a hospital.
Would you trust it?
What am I saying? If the phone is out of power or broke, you’re sol.
I guess I’ll have to wait for the biochip.
Back home they installed ATMs accessible by your fringerprint. They still need your PIN code and a combination of letters, but cardless.
How quickly would a finger lose its print if chopped off?
I’ve seen a few ATMs here with fingerprint readers.
Only after it rots. But good fingerprint sensors should do a “living” check.
Still, fingerprints are easy to steal and to fake, including spoofing that alive detection. See for example the German hacker Starbug’s many spectacular hacks in that direction.
By the way, palm or finger vein detection is often used instead on Japanese ATMs, Starbug just hacked these as well
That’s where Android, Apple, Samsung and other ‘Pay’ comes in, if they have a terminal they can process it.
Retinal scan! Than they poke out eyes!
Retina scanners have been pwned, too. No need to poke, can just fake.
Retinal veins scanners, though… that is kinda the last “unbroken” biometric identification method according to yesterday’s presentation by starbug. But probably only unbroken because no one tried hard enough yet, they have ideas already how to fake it.
Ear scans?
Banks there require an yearly living check. You go to the agency and do it at the counter, everything is very fast.
Btw, the fingerprint is not the only security measure to access the account. You still need the PIN code and the letter combination as well as the fingerprint. You just don’t need the card.
You all worried about losing a finger, and eye or whatever. How easily can you get your card stolen in a violent manner? I think the odds are disproportional. And plus, the pin is dynamic, you need an account PIN and a dynamic PIN sent to your token every time you do the transaction. The PIN is different each and everytime.
Oh, I meant that the fingerprint sensor on the ATM hopefully checks that the print is from a living finger. By looking at temperature, blood flow, pulse etc. Not some kind of fake silicon finger, or a dead cut-off finger etc.
I don’t know if they do that at the ATM. I haven’t used it much and just changed to add fingerprint last time I went back home. Don’t know about the ATM technology. But I do know about you have to go to the bank yearly to continue using it. Don’t know if they will change that afterwards.

Losing the finger would hurt a lot more though.

Just have it frozen off, no pain I guess.
They’ll want to keep it warm and lifelike

They’ll want to keep it warm and lifelike
It will keep nice and warm in most tropical countries
Depends on the version, there are a couple now, using NFC via phone, which is just your bank cards chip essentially copied to your phone, or it’s the pin version, like an authenticator, you press generate, it will give you a number that you put in the machine and bang, there’s your account.
