0 … 2,000 … 1 million
Anything under 10,000-20,000 I would consider low. I ride to work from Taipei to Chung-Ho everyday, and have totaled almost 5000km since I bought my scooter last October. On bikes around 10,000-20000 is when have to take it for its first major service check. About 30000-50,000 I would consider medium. Anything over that I would consider to be high for a small engine like those found in scooters here.
I’ve been told not to swear by the number on the odometer as it can be reversed by unscrupulous sellers.
If you can, take the scooter to a mechanic that you know or is recommended before buying and have him (her?) check it out.
Very true. Also, a lot of used scooter shops will just change the whole odometer or tamper with the circuits to reset the numbers, especially on scooters with digital displays.
so how to be sure a scooter is ok-la:
blue smoke - no good
black smoke - no good
suspension - If pushed down shouldn’t keep rocking as a boat on heavy see
There are many more things to check on.
It also might have been crashed and the frame can be deformed.
We could go on and on
You could also look at the handle bar … the rubbers shouldn’t look worn … the seat shouldn’t be either …

My scooter has 89,000 but it’s still going strong.
I’ve noticed Taiwanese often go by how old the scooter is, instead of how many miles on the clock. :loco:
10 years old, but only 5000km and kept indoors - don’t buy it, it’s too old.

Mine has 82481… no, 82482… no, wait, 82483… damn, I’m posting this on my PocketPC, doing 100km/h… I’d better stop. OK, 82484km.
The guy who sold me the scooter (at 78000km or so) said he had never repaired or rebuilt the engine. :saywhat:
And it’s still going strong, as far as I can tell. Max. speed about 110km/h (it’s a 125cc). On mountain roads it’s another story, but anyway… not bad for a 10 years old scooter.
Ok. Cindy and Andre, please post the scooter make and model. Obviously good second hand buys. ![]()

Mine is a SYM Bullet.
I couldn’t find any info on it on the internet, but it seems to be pretty similar to an Attila 125.
I don’t know about “a lot” …“all” might be more accurate. If you go to a second hand shop you’ll see that every single scooter or bike has between 3,000 to 6,000 kilometers on it…not too few as to be unbeliveable, and not too many as to be difficult to sell. It’s only when you see they ALL have roughly the same amount of kilometers on them that you realize the dupe.
Hmm… it would be interesting to sell my 82000km scooter to a bike shop, and check back a few days later, to find it with 6000km on the odometer and NT$20000 more expensive.
Maybe those guys have a Fountain of Youth or something…

The bigger shops where many bikes are rebuilt and sold all change the odometer on their bikes. It’s a normal practice.
