Just to add a bit… If I’m not mistaken, the Japanese vocal pause is “ano…,” literally “that.” Similar to the Mandarin vocal pause na4ge, no? Is this a common thing in East Asian languages? Anyone know the main vocal pauses in Korean?
Er2yi3 has a long pedigree in Classical Chinese. It’s a pure classical phrase: “That being so, it is ended.” “There’s nothing more to it.” “That’s all, folks.”
