What is Upstate NY?

Ugh— just when I thought we were getting on well.

This is news to me. Where’s the perimeter?

I’ll go with Albany.

Maybe Saratoga. Definitely the Adirondacks— as far as Utica— maybe.

Anything above Lake George is the North Country— even though folks in Plattsburgh will say otherwise. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

But Rochester? No. That’s what we in Upstate call “Out west— western New York.”

And you all are “The City.”

I get WNY from harness racing. Like Ray Schnittker. We also say the City, but we mean Manhattan.

Sure-- and I imagine LI says the same. New York is confusing!

For sure!

What? How is Rochester not upstate?

Shoot, Westchester is practically upstate.

Because WE people who live upstate don’t call it that.

Westchester! That’s still well in our field of vision.

Can it be up if you’re already there? Maybe you should just call it state.

We know where we are. We call everything south down to the city, “downstate” and then, “the city.” Everything west, “Western NY.”

You have the right to your own identity, I respect that. We’ll have to disagree on Rochester though

Well, if THEY think THEY’RE upstate, they out they mind.

No wonder no one likes them.

I know some folks out that way. I will conduct some research.

Ask them about where the finger lakes region starts then. Or if Binghamton is “Upstate.” lol

I lived in upstate. In CNY and WNY, which upstate includes. Practically everyone I knew from NY, whether CNY, WNY, north counties, southern tier, Long Island, the city, etc used upstate for anything north of Westchester.

Yep.

The problem with NY, is that it is broken down too much. The Catskills are not upstate if you live in the ADK.

Central NY, is by definition, NOT upstate, for example.

I’m wondering, given his extensive travels all over everywhere if poundguy was a military brat.

Incorrect, there’s clearly multiple definitions, most of which seem to include CNY. Here for example:

Nope. Just lived a few places and traveled a bit.

You go with wiki. I’ll go with my decades of experience living there.
